Unisex Outer Flame Jacket

The fourth dimension in layered protection

Our Outerflame Jacket is an insulated fourth layer designed to be worn over the top of a waterproof shell - providing winter walkers, trekkers and skiers with instant, convenient warmth.

The concept of ‘over-layering’ is not entirely new. Winter climbers have been using ‘belay jackets’ for quite a few years. The idea is simple: when you’re actually climbing you’re usually warm enough. But, when you stop to belay, you get cold pretty quickly. And, given that your shell is usually tucked firmly under your harness, the last thing you want to do (when you’re balancing on a little ledge) is loosen your harness, strip off your waterproof, put on some insulation and then get dressed all over again. A belay jacket is designed to be thrown on over everything – offering immediate warmth, without any fuss.

We thought this was a pretty cool concept and decided to apply it to a jacket that was more tailored to the specific needs of winter trekkers and hill-walkers. The result is a coat that offers all the warmth and ease of use of a belay jacket with a few Rohan enhancements and improvements.

Our Outerflame Jacket is lined with Insuloft™, our phenomenally efficient synthetic insulating wadding. We’ve gone for a 100g weight in the arms and hood with 160g weight in the body – where you need it most. It’s light, compressible and provides superb warmth – even when it’s wet.

The outer and inner are made from a tough, lightweight 100% polyamide. We’ve treated both the inner and outer surfaces with our advanced Permanent Water Repellency™ finish. This gives protection from moisture in the air – but also protects the lining when you’re wearing the Outerflame over a wet shell jacket.

The jacket is designed to be worn reversed in an emergency – the lining is coloured in ‘Safety Orange’ – a colour specifically chosen to stand out from its surroundings. You’ll see it in traffic cones, high-visibility hunting clothes and the tips of barrels of replica rifles! To further improve visibility, there’s a reflective strip on the hood. Basically, if you’ve broken your ankle high in the Carneddau and you’re waiting to be rescued, Prince William will be able to find you more easily in his helicopter. The colour looks pretty good in photos too.

The jacket is cut slightly longer than typical climbers’ belay jackets which tend to be fairly short to avoid interfering with a harness and belay device. This has two benefits: firstly the jacket offers a bit more protection in the outdoors and, secondly, the longer length – in conjunction with the understated appearance - makes our Outerflame far more suitable for general-purpose everyday wear in the winter.

The Outerflame features a deep, insulated hood with our simple but highly effective One-Pull™ adjustment system.

The twin hand pockets are mounted slightly higher than normal and feature cosy, fleece linings and chunky zip pullers which are easy to operate with mitts on.

One of the pockets contains an emergency whistle (ISO 12402-8 standard) – which is secured to the inside of the pocket with a long, detachable lanyard.

Adjustable drawcords at the hem and soft, comfortable cuffs seal in the heat and fine-tune the fit.

The whole jacket stuffs down into one of the zipped hand pockets for easy and compact storage in your rucksack.

A Note on Sizing

Our Outerflame Jacket is ‘over-sized’. So, if you’re wearing a medium Mountain Guide Jacket over a medium Microgrid Stowaway Zip with a medium Superfine Merino base layer, a medium-sized Outerflame will be perfect over the whole lot. If you’re intending on wearing the Outerflame as a more general-purpose jacket over, say, a light fleece or T-shirt, you might want to think about sizing down.
