Taking something away is easy - losing nothing is not
Taking something away is easy - losing nothing is not
Thirty years experience has boiled down to next to nothing - our Elite Jacket is one of the very lightest 3-layer waterproofs available anywhere in the world.
It’s totally waterproof, phenomenally breathable and, although minimalist, offers all the features you really need. We think it’s the best three-season shell jacket money can buy.
The fabric is something really special. It’s a 3-layer material consisting of a polyamide outer, our high-spec Barricade™ membrane and a fine tricot lining. It’s amazingly durable – but, at only 70 grams per square metre, astonishingly light. To put that in perspective that’s 12gsm lighter than our lightest summer shirt fabric. Which, when you stop to think about it, is almost incredible.
The jacket has been treated with our Durable Water Repellency™ finish to stop the face fabric wetting out and maximise breathability. This industry-leading process has been proven to operate at 80% effectiveness after 20 washes – which for a shell jacket probably means 10 years.
With a fabric this light, we could have opted to strip out features and components and make something that’s so light it could float away. But we’ve decided not to. Our Elite Jacket is built with durable, high-quality components and includes all the essential features. It’s a fully-functional shell that lives up to Rohan’s reputation for strength, durability and longevity.
It features two large hand pockets which sit well above the waist line, so the jacket works with a rucksack hip-belt or harness. They close with water-repellent zips.
Inside, you’ll find a stretch-mesh zipped pocket which doubles up as a Packpocket™, into which the whole jacket packs to minimise the space it takes up in your rucksack.
The hood – which offers full protection in the very worst weather – is a deconstructed version of our famously functional One-Pull™ concept. It cinches, as you might expect, with one, simple pull and features no-flap drawcords. Which avoids that annoying, and fairly painful, face whipping you get with an ordinary waterproof hood when the wind gets up.
The jacket features adjustable cuffs and hem drawcords which allow you to control the ventilation and fine-tune the fit.
Our Elite Jacket is the perfect partner to our bomb-proof winter workhorse, the Pinnacle Jacket. If you’re out every day in winter - trekking, climbing, instructing or guiding – it’s still the best choice. But, for the rest of us, the Elite Jacket is the only waterproof you’ll ever need.
Trail magazine – Best in Test, Lightweight Waterproof Jackets
In November 2010, Graham Thompson, Trail’s well-respected technical editor, thoroughly tested a wide range of lightweight waterproof jackets. Our Elite Jacket beat off some pretty stiff competition to be awarded the Trail Best in Test accolade. His verdict? “The combination of materials and practical features make the Elite an ideal lightweight jacket. 5/5”.”
Barricade™ Washing Instructions
Rohan Barricade™ waterproofs are easy to care for. Simply machine wash them at 40°C with a regular detergent. We recommend a second rinse to remove all traces of the detergent from the fabric. Don’t use fabric softeners or bleaching agents. Garments may be drip dried. Over time, the water repellent treatment on the surface of the fabric may become less effective and water will stop beading up on the outside of the jacket. Tumble drying on a warm, not hot, setting or careful ironing on the coolest setting will rejuvenate the finish.
Fabric: 3-layer Barricade™ with DWR™
Pack Size: 800ml
Drying Time: 4 hours
Cutting down windchill can make more difference to your comfort and safety than the amount of insulation you are wearing. We offer two ratings according to use: Windproof and Highly Wind Resistant.
Wet clothing transmits body heat nearly twenty-five times faster than dry. All clothing with this symbol is guaranteed to be totally waterproof. And highly breathable membrane technology means that you won’t get wet from inside either.
Pocket science at Rohan is all about precision and detail of design, but most of all, it’s about keeping your most important stuff safe at times when losing keys, passports and wallet is more than just an inconvenience. We use several different methods – whichever is the most appropriate. Some pockets are completely hidden with micro zips, some are touch and close with roll-over tops and some are high quality zips.
Good design is more often about what to take off than what to put on. And clever design is about giving one feature two functions, that’s why many Rohan garments feature an internal mesh stretch pocket that doubles as a Packpocket™ for easy storage.
Conventional waterproof fabrics cannot adapt to the changing weather outside and the changing micro-climate inside. Barricade™ is different, it is dynamic and responds to your body temperature and the humidity of the surrounding environment. The sweatier and steamier things get inside, the better the membrane works and the more vapour escapes.
Our durable water resistant finish, which forces water droplets to ‘bead up’ and run off the outside of the jacket, is designed to remain at 80% efficiency – even after 20 washes.
We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.
Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.
There’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing. Rohan is your constant companion for every journey, whatever the journey.
