There doesn’t seem to be such a thing as a fair-weather birdwatcher. If you’re into birding, you’re into birding. Summer or winter. Rain or shine. Costa Rica or St Kilda. So what you need is layers to suit every eventuality, with a top priority being protection from the cold. If you’re sitting still for long periods of time, extra insulation is a must. Camouflaged clothing is rarely necessary, but earthy colours are normally a good choice. But no matter what – don’t forget to bring a nice flask of hot soup. That really is essential.
