The ultimate base layer, our Merino Union 200 T combines the quick-drying nature of a synthetic, and merino wool’s natural anti-bacterial properties.
When it comes to protecting the wearer, nothing matches the feel and comfort of natural merino wool. And when it comes to durability, nothing compares to polyester base layers. So, for the ultimate base layer, we’ve created a union of the two.
Merino wool has an uncanny ability to regulate your temperature in a wide range of conditions. It’s nice and cosy in the cold but never too hot when the temperature or your activity level starts to rise.
It ‘wicks’ moisture extremely efficiently and, because wool is the only fibre in the world which can absorb vapour, it delays the onset of sweating – keeping you far more comfortable and eliminating that unpleasant chilling feeling you sometimes get when you take a break or slow down.
Because of the high quality of fibre we specify, the Merino Union 200 T is incredibly soft and luxuriously comfortable next to the skin – there’s none of the unpleasant itching you get with ordinary wool or poor quality merino.
Merino has another remarkable property which makes it particularly suitable for a base layer. It has an amazing natural resistance to the build-up of odour. You really can wear it for days on end without feeling the need to give it a wash. On a long trip, where washing facilities are limited, it’s a real boon – to your popularity with your companions, if nothing else.
And when the time finally does come for a bit of a freshen up, you’ll find it’s simplicity itself to wash. Just throw it in the machine or rinse it through with travel wash. Hang it out to dry and it’ll be ready to go again the next day.
Our Merino Union 200 T is designed in a classic crew neck T-shirt style that looks just as good for everyday wear and travel as it does worn as a base layer in the hills.

Building stretch into our fabrics offers some big advantages. It allows us to make very comfortable, streamlined clothing. And a close fit has big advantages for active people. Clothes don’t flap in the wind, they work well in a layering system without bulking up and because there is less fabric, they are lighter, dry quicker and pack smaller – all critical Rohan virtues.
We use man-made technical insulation that offers high levels of thermal efficiency, quick dry times and minimum bulk. We also use the finest goose down for the coldest environments. All materials for cold weather, that carry the warmth icon, are rated Base, Mid, High or Extreme allowing you to select what you need with accuracy.
We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.
Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.
There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing. Rohan is your constant companion for every journey, whatever the journey.
