Offering a combination of natural merino wool and technical polyester, our Merino Union 150 Crew is the ultimate “best-of-both worlds” base layer.
Our Merino Union 150 Crew takes advantage of the incredible properties of nature’s finest technical fabric and combines them with the quick-drying, hardwearing performance of polyester to create the ultimate “best-of-both-worlds” base-layer.
Merino wool has an uncanny ability to regulate your temperature in a wide range of conditions. It’s nice and cosy in the cold but never too hot when the temperature or your activity levels start to rise.
It ‘wicks’ moisture extremely efficiently and, because wool is the only fibre in the world which can absorb vapour, it delays the onset of sweating – keeping you far more comfortable and eliminating that unpleasant chilling feeling you sometimes get when you take a break or slow down.
Merino wool is also incredibly soft and comfortable next to the skin – there’s none of the unpleasant itching you get with ordinary wool.
Merino wool also has another remarkable property which makes it particularly suitable for a base layer. It has an amazing natural resistance to the build-up of odour. You really can wear it for days on end without feeling the need to give it a wash. On a long trip, where washing facilities are limited, it’s a real boon.
But, for all its strengths, merino wool isn’t 100% perfect. It’s not quite as hard-wearing as a synthetic base layer – and it takes a bit longer to dry.
Which is why we’ve added 37% polyester to the blend.
Durability is increased. And drying times are reduced.
It really does offer the best of both worlds.

Building stretch into our fabrics offers some big advantages. It allows us to make very comfortable, streamlined clothing. And a close fit has big advantages for active people. Clothes don’t flap in the wind, they work well in a layering system without bulking up and because there is less fabric, they are lighter, dry quicker and pack smaller – all critical Rohan virtues.
We use man-made technical insulation that offers high levels of thermal efficiency, quick dry times and minimum bulk. We also use the finest goose down for the coldest environments. All materials for cold weather, that carry the warmth icon, are rated Base, Mid, High or Extreme allowing you to select what you need with accuracy.
We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.
Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.
There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing. Rohan is your constant companion for every journey, whatever the journey.
