Ideal for warmer weather and active outdoor use, this fantastic lightweight fleece is the definitive choice for a mid-layer.Read more…
Our best-selling Microgrid Stowaway Zip is one of our most popular lightweight fleeces and with good reason.
It's made from an advanced fleece fabric which uses a sophisticated knitting technique to create a grid pattern on the surface of the fabric. These grids give the fleece an attractive textured appearance but they also bring with them a host of technical benefits. It enables the fabric to trap air, lots of it, giving you a surprisingly high level of warmth.
These perforations have other benefits too – they reduce the bulk of the garment and make it lighter, so it’s far more comfortable to wear than a traditional fleece. It’s also more breathable and it packs down small – perfect for taking with you on your next camping trip.
It features a zipped chest pocket for convenient storage of outdoor and travel essentials. The mesh lining can also double as a refreshing vent when the pocket is left open. The raglan sleeve construction reduces rubbing that can be caused when layering garments together, and the addition of thumb loops make it extra comfortable to wear and great for keeping your hands warm.
The Microgrid Stowaway Zip is a versatile fleece overhead designed to maximize the properties of this remarkable material. It’s a simple design but with a high specification technical fabric and is perfect as a layering piece when used with a waterproof or windproof outer layer.
100% polyester microfleece.

Pocket science at Rohan is all about precision and detail of design, but most of all, it’s about keeping your most important stuff safe at times when losing keys, passports and wallet is more than just an inconvenience. We use several different methods – whichever is the most appropriate. Some pockets are completely hidden with micro zips, some are touch and close with roll-over tops and some are high quality zips.
We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.
Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

This is my second microgrid stowaway zip fleece, the first was slightly different pattern of the two tones. On this one the arms are a bit longer and are definitely narrower. On this one it's fine over a T shirt, but I struggle to get the fleece on over a long sleeved shirt. The previous model was fine over long sleeves.
I purchased the Two tone version - the longer arms were an issue for me to start with, however I liked the design too much to return it - my suggestion is to turn the sleeve inwards - its comfortable and looks good and in cold weather simply pull down the sleeve to use the thumbholes (works for me) - i have 2 other previous versions of the stowaway so yes it’s a favourite
I have bought four of these fleeces over the last couple of years. The sleeves cause no problems to me. They need to be slightly long to allow use of the thumb holes. I was born without a thumb on one hand and most garments slip down over my hand as the hand is narrower without a thumb bone. This garment does not slip down over that hand unless I pull it down to keep my hands warm. I have ordered yet another fleece from ROHAN in the past week.
I have been faithful to this garment since 2005, during which period I have owned in excess of 10 design and colour versions. It is a very versatile fleece, suitable for both Summer and Winter wear, light and packable. Prior to ordering the Pacific Blue / Coal version on line, I noted the Reviews commenting about the inordinate length of the sleeves. I decided to check the situation by visiting Rohan's London shop. Sadly, I found that the negative reviews are entirely justified. I have relatively long arms, requring a minimum sleeve length (measured from the centre neck line) of 35 cm. I tried on the Medium size and found that the sleeves ended at my finger tips! The Sales Assistant was equally surprised and could offer no explanation as to why the design had been altered. I was so disappointed that I have contacted Customer Services to provide additional feedback. PLEASE designers, re-think this unnecessary change. I have no wish to have to wave "goodbye" to this faithful friend!
I have been wearing these fleeces on a daily basis for about 5 years, in the variously named blues and greys, and over the several small design changes and currently have half a dozen. The medium size fits me perfectly and I have no problem with the sleeve length and don’t use the thumb holes...maybe I just have long arms! They are a dream to wash and dry overnight. The only reason to drop a star is that the fleece seems to loose it’s pile quite quickly through washing and therefore is less effective as an insulating layer, but even so I have now just bought a new one.
Having purchased my third stowaway zip very disappointed to discover that the sleeves are FOUR inches longer than previous fleeces. Thought I’d manage to cope with increased length but not the case.
Whilst the garment is ideal for wearing in cooler temperatures the sleeves are ridiculously too long. I would consider the length of my arms as ‘normal’ and I bought the small size fleece, expecting the sleeves to be a reasonable fit for my small/medium frame. However, I have to roll up the sleeves several times at the cuff to attempt to get a decent fit. I accept that the sleeve ends have a built in thumb ‘slot’ and the sleeves are, therefore, a little longer than normal, but they have been completely over-engineered! Very disappointed.
