The Full Story+

Offering a reassuring level of protection from showers, cold and wind, the Mistral Jacket’s light weight and small pack size make it a great choice for taking on hillside walks and coastal adventures.

The technical, high loft Octa™ Yarn lining offers an advanced alternative to a standard polyester fleece. The secret is the sophisticated construction of the individual polyester fibres that make up the fabric. They have a hollow core together with a total of eight “side fins”: in cross section the filaments have the appearance of a star – with a hole through the middle which trap pockets of air against the body.

This clever material is far more thermally efficient than traditional fleece in both dry and wet conditions. Visually, the lining has a striking honeycomb pattern and is incredibly soft against the skin for an exceptionally comfortable fit.

The ripstop polyester exterior, despite feeling soft, is very hard-wearing and with the addition of the Durable Water Repellency™ finish, it offers great resistance to showers and prevents the garment from wetting out.

The genius of the yarn means that it has excellent warmth to weight ratio. The reduction in bulk and the lightweight exterior fabric results in an extremely packable garment, weighing only 325g. And with the addition of a Packpocket™, it’s easy to stick it in your bag and take with you on your adventures.

The yarn has great wicking properties which make it breathable, but also give it a quick dry time. And you can wash it on a cool wash in the machine or by hand, making it really easy to care for.

There’s a fixed hood which adds extra protection from showers, wind and cold. There’s also a zipped chest pocket and two zipped hand pockets. The hood edge, sleeve cuffs and dropped rear hem are all elasticated to trap warmth and improve the fit.

This luxuriously soft, ultra-lightweight jacket offers an impressive amount of thermal efficiency for its size, making it an ideal choice for taking on cold weather adventures.

Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.

All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

Octa Yarn

Offering an extremely high warmth-to-weight ratio in conjunction with superb breathability, compressibility and packability, our Octa™ Yarn lining offers an advanced alternative to a standard polyester fleece. It’s the perfect choice for walking, hillwalking and all active outdoor use.

DURABLE WATER REPELLENCY™

Our DWR ™ finish is an advanced treatment which dramatically increases the water repellency of our fabrics. On its own, it offers a useful level of shower resistance; used in conjunction with our Barricade™ technology, it reduces the tendency of the face fabric to wet out and maximizes breathability.

Packpocket™

Clever design is more often than not about what to take off rather than what to put on. It’s about giving one feature multiple functions. That’s why many of our garments feature a Packpocket™. This handy addition converts pockets into space-saving storage by compressing the garment into itself. You could use it as a travel pillow when it’s all packed down too.

2 Secure Pockets

Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.

Mistral Jacket

★★★★★

Just bought this in final reductions of the Sale, so happy with the price. I am 6’1" and there was only XL left. The sleeves could not be any shorter for me but the waist is a little baggy. I love the light weight and the soft lining. Nice to wear over just a t shirt. Hood fits nicely but personally prefer a hood that stores away. My hands tend to push some of the lining out of the end of the sleeves. Have only worn it in light rain so far when it was perfect. I think I’ll get a lot of use out of this in summer and autumn.

Got exactly what I wanted......

★★★★★

I saw a Mistral jacket in the local Rohan store about two weeks ago and liked it a lot, but thought £140.00 was quite expensive for a lightweight jacket. About a week later, I was still "umming and aaahing" about buying one one, when an a good email offer came in from Rohan. I ordered one immediately and it arrived today. First impressions are very good, - it's very light, stylish and comfortable. It's just right for my intended use, which is for those days when it's mild/warm but there's a chance of rain (or it's already raining!) and my usual jackets would be too heavy to wear or lug around all day. I like the features, especially the lining and the "Pack Pocket". It's an ideal "take-anywhere" jacket and I can see me wearing it a lot.

As good as it gets as a one jacket does all product

★★★★★

I haven't really come across anything comparable to this jacket, after years of fleeces and windstopper I stumbled across this. I bought it 12 months ago and have pretty much worn it constantly ever since - sun, rain and snow. It's super light and packable, comfortable to wear all year round, lovely against your skin, great if there's an unexpected shower, totally windproof and amazingly warm in even the coldest weather (you don't need much else in terms of layers). I use it walking around my local trails in Snowdonia but it's just as much at home going shopping around town. My wife thought it was so good she bought one and has worn it constantly (we've both just ordered another to keep as spares).

Only improvement would be a fold away hood or some way to keep it from flapping about in a gale, it's so light that the wind catches hold.

Great Jacket and really the only one of its kind...

★★★★☆

I had been looking at getting one of these for a while but thought they were way overpriced at their full price of £140, so I waited for the inevitable sale and got one at £85, which given its unique features, is a fair (ish) price.

Their are three main things that I really like about it, The weight, or lack thereof, Its ability to pack down to such a small size and the interior lining.

300g (ish) is about as low as you can get for a jacket of this type with a water repellent shell & fleece type lining, and it does pack down really well to a nice small bundle.

The best feature though is the unique mesh fleece lining, lovely and warm, as well as being soft to the skin.

You could easily wear this jacket without a base-layer around camp, if your other tops are damp, it really does feel like a luxurious base-layer next to the skin.

You can also turn the hood inside out, zip the jacket all the way up, to form a nice fleece lining around the back of your neck and sides, giving great protection from cold winds and draughts.

I can't speak as to its ability to keep out the rain, as where I live its been very dry since buying it but that's not something I'm particularly concerned with, as in heavy rain, this would be under a proper waterproof shell jacket.

My only negative is regards the fit, for a Rohan product, this is definitely on the smaller side, mainly around the shoulders.

I am a Medium size, and normally there is plenty of room to spare with Rohan clothing when moving & extending my arms around, but with this jacket, I can definitely feel a (slight) tightness across my back and around my shoulders.

Maybe they cut back on their normally (very) generous sizing in order to keep the weight & pack size down with this one??

Overall, Highly recommended....but not at £140!

Mistral Jacket

★★★★★

Well, the blurb says, “protection from cold, wind and showers”.......it does exactly that. I have had the jacket for a week and worn it every day since on Dartmoor. Conditions have been perfect with short, sharp rain and hail showers and a very strong breeze. Probably perfect weather for this jacket and it has excelled. My feeling is it’s a tad expensive but I did buy it and as the saying goes, “you get what you pay for”! I love it!!

Errr yeah, really good!

★★★★★

Tried one of these on in store when it first came out and was impressed but couldn't justify a purchase as I have a lot of mid-layer/soft shell stuff already. Then it was reduced massively in a sale and I bought one and have pretty much lived in it ever since. Great cut, warm and comfortable to wear, useful pockets. Wear it as a jacket or a mid layer depending on temperature/weather and great to wear when slobbing around in the back of a camper van. Only draw back is the lining is quite loose and has a tendency to follow your hand out of the cuff when putting the jacket on. Not a major problem and happens on similar style jackets from other brands too. Great jacket.

Very happy

★★★★★

Received this as a gift on the eve of a planned trip to Orkney.

The jacket is very lightweight but amazingly warm and windproof. One morning we got up to see the sunrise and I wore this jacket over a t shirt. The wind was very strong but I didn't feel a thing through the jacket.

It kept me warm and dry for a whole week of Scottish weather. Very very happy with the jacket.

great kit

★★★★★

I have had mine for about a couple of months and love it. Its so light and the water repellence is remarkable good so far. In fact I like it so much that I went to buy another but they were out of stock in blue and the other colours in my size were at full price- another £50 so I held back. Great product.

Great piece of active insulation kit

★★★★★

Well designed active insulation jacket with decent amount of octa yarn insulation (98g/m) which is roughly equivalent to Polartec Alpha insulation.

Manages body temperature and wicks moisture really well so great for cooler days wearing whilst moving. Windproof but also breathes well and dries quickly. Just needs a base layer (or not if you're brave!) underneath.

Fit is true to size for me but is a slim fit (as it should for a technical piece of clothing) . Hood fits well & has a generous torso length - shame the sleeves are not as generous to cover hands when not wearing gloves but now I'm getting fussy! Elasticated waist and cuffs work fine, zipped pockets good but hip belt will get in the way.

To achieve all this within the 329g weight for medium is impressive.

It's gonna see a lot of use!

Review of Mistral Jacket

★★☆☆☆

Was looking for something bit more windproof than my fleece on a breezy day which just seems to blow straight through, but without getting overheated. Bought for me as a present.

I'm 6'2" and needed to get XL to get sleeves long enough.

Used everyday on my long walks in quite breezy chilly conditions at times, but still only lowland walking.

Although there is some elastication on the hem its is still loose so when it's windy it just blows underneath, which is compounded by tendency to ride up which doesn't help.

Similarly as there is no elastication or cords around hood/neck allows wind to get in here as well.

In the end I resorted to a neckscarf to keep neck sealed and warm.

All rather defeats having a wind-proof fabric in the first place!

A couple of simple press-studs or cord would make all the difference but not add too much weight.

Despite this I quickly felt clammy and sweaty inside the jacket, even with just merino wool base layer on.

My phone in the chest pocket kept getting covered in moisture and you could feel it wet on the inside of the outer in the pocket. Note none of the pockets are lined.

I have owned many Rohan products in the past and been very happy but with the Mistral have been dissappointed and will be heading back to shop we bought it to return.

Men's Mistral

★★★★★

Bought the jacket ( on a discount day) specifically for the Everest base camp trek where it excelled. It replaced two other tops to keep weight down. Great all purpose lightweight wind proof and proved cosy over just a base layer when trekking, with chilly early morning starts at -5. The close unstructured fit , unusual "knitted" insulation and hood meant it was even comfortable to sleep in when our main luggage failed to find us one night. Easily washed out the all pervading Himalayan dust on return. Has also proved versatile throughout the Autumn in the UK, will turn the odd shower and dry quickly.

Pretty Impressive

★★★★☆

Well - the good stuff; light weight, very wind resistant, comfortable and lovely and warm. I used this is a cold, strong wind on the edges of Wildboar fell and it was very impressive. The only minus point is the cuff design - it isn't adjustable and for me it is awkward and rather too tight in use - change that and the jacket would be perfect!

My review of the mens minstrel jacket

★★★★★

My wife brought this for herself, and has lived in it all week, it is a light comfortable and warm jacket, it's perfect in every way, she chose the mens due to the longer length at the back. She bought the jacket from the Dunster store. Thank you too all the staff for your advise at Rohan Dunster
