The Stratus Jacket uses plant-based Sustans® insulation that has performance similarities to both traditional down and synthetic wadding, creating a ‘best-of-both-worlds’ material.
Read more…The Stratus Jacket is packed full of benefits thanks to its innovative insulation. It’s incredibly warm, water-resistant, wind-resistant and machine washable, plus it looks and feels fantastic.
Like regular synthetic insulation, Sustans® fibres have a superior elasticity that achieves great recovery, flexibility and warmth retention whilst also being fully machine washable and quick drying – a perk that can’t be achieved in most natural downs due to its high moisture absorption. But, unlike wadded synthetic insulation, it mimics the look and feel of real down by manufacturing the fibres into fill-like clusters rather than sheets of wadding, creating a softer finish with a better drape.
Sustans® fibres look very similar to synthetic fibres, but instead of using traditional oil to make the polyamide, it uses plant-based oil.
Using this wonderful insulation on the interior in conjunction with the tough polyamide on the exterior and a Durable Water Repellency™ finish, the Stratus Jacket is able to offer impressive levels of warmth and water-resistance, as well as easycare functionality and long-lasting durability.
With two secure mesh lined hand pockets and two internal stash pockets, there’s plenty of room for your necessities. Whilst one of the internal pockets also doubles as a Packpocket™ so you can compress it down small and chuck it in your bag.
The fixed hood has a single point of adjustability on the back and has stretch binding around the face. There’s also stretch binding around the cuffs and an adjustable hem – all of which work to improve the fit and trap warm air.
An excellent choice for outdoor enthusiasts, the Stratus Jacket with its innovative Sustans® insulation performs brilliantly on cold weather adventures whilst still offering great thermal efficiency in changeable, wetter conditions.

We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.
Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.
Sustans® is a highly insulating synthetic filling that mimics the look, feel and performance of natural down. Manufactured from a plant-based oil, it’s lightweight, highly compressible and offers a comfortable, soft feel. It’s fully machine washable and extremely quick drying – the perfect choice for cold-weather travel and outdoor use.
Our DWR ™ finish is an advanced treatment which dramatically increases the water repellency of our fabrics. On its own, it offers a useful level of shower resistance; used in conjunction with our Barricade™ technology, it reduces the tendency of the face fabric to wet out and maximizes breathability.
Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.
Clever design is more often than not about what to take off rather than what to put on. It’s about giving one feature multiple functions. That’s why many of our garments feature a Packpocket™. This handy addition converts pockets into space-saving storage by compressing the garment into itself. You could use it as a travel pillow when it’s all packed down too.

This jacket is so brilliantly designed. I chose Extra Large so in extreme conditions I could have an under layer. The zip is absolutely robust but necessarily thin so as to ensure full insulation. With the hood my head is well protected as it overhangs my face and leaves my specs. well protected. My Extra Large Helix Jacket fits well on top so where there's no watering holes open due to ,Covid-19 these two would ensure complete survival without an inner layer, even in the most extreme conditions!. In my opinion it's better than the men's DownTown Jacket which don't have a hood.
I own many of these types of jacket and this one is of a very high standard. It’s warm, performs when wet and is very light. I love it.
Pleased with my purchase of the Stratus jacket the fit is good the insulation is the best i have in any coat/jacket my only disappointment as has been stated in other reviews is the ZIP it certainly needs to be more substantial, at least double the size, i have larger zips on my summer fleeces!!
Had my jacket for about 5 months now. I have a pukka down jacket for use on the hill, but wanted something lighter for everyday use about town. I really like the fit and cut of the jacket, and layered underneath I'm nice and toasty. It could really have done with an internal security pocket though. The thing I really have a problem with is the zip. This is totally not suitable for an outdoor garment. The zip is more suited to a fleece or cardigan than an outdoor jacket. It needs a more substantial zip. In the 5 months I've had the jacket the zip has split apart (from bottom to top) on at least three occasions. This really isn't good enough. If it happens once more I shall be contacting Rohan customer services. I maybe should have done that already.
As previous review bought larger size for layering . Could have done with napoleon pocket for security, but my inner layer shirt has one taa dah . Really pleased with the fit and insulation. Nice colour + it packs away small enough so I can stash in my motorcycle pannier when I go touring ( I’m a winter and summer biker ) good ,well priced jacket
I liked the look of this jacket when I first saw it in the catalogue and when it appeared in the sale of was a no brainer to get one. I chose size XL and it leaves a bit of room for layering. The cut is not "athletic" thank you Rohan, we do not all go to the gym. Construction and quality are first rate. It is light enough to scrunch into your sack and there are no flashy logos either, just a discrete Rohan on the chest. First test was a trip to the shops, hardly a severe environment but it was dry and minus one Celcius. I just wore the jacket over a t shirt and it was easily warm enough, too warm in the supermarket actually, the insulation really works well.
A chest pocket would have been nice but the internal dump pockets are adequate, the hip pockets are mesh lined for ventilation.
The hood looks too simple at first glance, but the combination of the single rear adjuster cord and the elastic binding around the face works well, vision is not restricted.
Overall I am very impressed with the Stratus jacket. Obviously it needs a more vigorous test out in the hills but it's more than useful as a winter travel jacket.
