For the seasoned traveller, our new Frontier Jacket is an inspired choice.
It looks and feels like a heavy-duty canvas jacket but is far more breathable, lighter and softer to wear: substantial but not stiff, protective yet comfortable. In addition to the storage options, it features some thoughtful touches such as adjustable sleeve cuffs and a storm flap over the main zip for added protection in windy conditions.
Offering rugged good looks and understated practicality, the Frontier Jacket is made from an extremely tough but lightweight polyamide with a tear resistant construction. It features seven outer and three inner pockets and is the perfect solution for those with a demanding outdoor lifestyle who like to have a place for everything and everything in its place.
Little wonder it's a popular choice photographers and journalists on overseas assignments as well as for those who simply appreciate its combination of style and practicality.

Pocket science at Rohan is all about precision and detail of design, but most of all, it’s about keeping your most important stuff safe at times when losing keys, passports and wallet is more than just an inconvenience. We use several different methods – whichever is the most appropriate. Some pockets are completely hidden with micro zips, some are touch and close with roll-over tops and some are high quality zips.
Our durable water resistant finish, which forces water droplets to ‘bead up’ and run off the outside of the jacket, is designed to remain at 80% efficiency – even after 20 washes.
We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.
Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

The Frontier Jacket has many storage options, with two chest pockets, two waist patch pockets, two hand pockets and four zipped pockets (three of these zipped pockets being inside for added security). It has so many places to store items such as a camera, a phone, a notepad, a wallet, a map, et cetera that I rarely need to carry a bag when wearing this jacket.
The material is polyamide and is very soft and comfortable to wear – not hard at all. It does not crease, and rain water splashes off due to the Durable Water Repellent technology, although it would not keep you 100% dry in prolonged rain. It is just over 600g in weight, and can be packed in a suitcase or rucksack quite easily. It seems very strong and durable – I brushed into plants and rocks without any damage whatsoever to the material of the jacket.
It is very breathable and keeps you cool in hot and humid conditions, but also keeps you warm when the temperature drops. I wore this jacket for hiking and exploring in mountain areas of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The combination of hot and humid temperatures during the day but significantly lower temperatures after sunset posed no problem for this jacket – it was very effective in both.
The sleeve cuffs can be adjusted for added comfort, and there is a useful storm flap over the main zip. These are very good features for keeping the wind out, especially in mountain areas.
This jacket looks very striking (so I have been told!!) – I think it actually looks much better in reality than the Rohan website photos. I also have the Frontier Vest which is a good option for hotter and more humid conditions.
The pockets will hold securely all the essentials: passport, wallet, camera, smartphone, keys, papers etc, and it still looks reasonably smart. And comfortable in warm weather.
Only negative is that things with corners ( like a passport or a map ) can be hard to get into the pockets because the corners snag on the pocket material.
