The Full Story+

Appearances can be deceptive.

Take our Equator Shirt for instance. To the casual observer, it's simply a great looking summer shirt, but look closer and you'll start to see the Rohan touch.

Notice the two chest pockets? It's no accident that they're large enough to swallow a passport, and fastened with zip closures to keep it, and other valuables, safe.

Note the deep cuff openings and hidden tabs inside the arm to make it easier to roll the sleeves up and secure them into position when you need to cool down.

Take a look on the inside of the hem; you'll spot a rectangular panel of microfibre stitched to the fabric - it's a hidden wipe to help keep clean the specks off your specs. Neat huh?

You’ll notice that there aren’t any buttons. Our Equator shirts use lightweight popper fastenings for ease of use and a rugged, functional look.

The rear yoke is pleated for both comfort and freedom of movement, and we’ve also included Dryloops™ at the hem so you can hang the shirt out to dry without the need to pack clothes pegs on your travels.

However, it’s not just the physical attributes that prove this isn’t your average casual shirt. It's made from a technical fabric blend incorporating Dynamic Moisture Control™ for fast wicking and quicker drying.

And, if that wasn’t enough, it’s also been treated with Silvadur odour control technology. This clever, patented anti-microbial technology inhibits the growth of microorganisms and the associated build-up of odour – really useful when the going gets hot and sticky.

Fabric: 56% polyamide, 44% polyester with Dynamic Moisture Control™ and Silvadur™ odour control technology

Lightweight - Weight: 195g
Lightweight - Weight: 195g

We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.

Packable - Pack Size: 500ml
Packable - Pack Size: 500ml

Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.

Fast Drying - Drying Time: 3 hours
Fast Drying - Drying Time: 3 hours

All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

SUN PROTECTION UPF 40+

This garment has been tested in accordance with recognized international standards for ultraviolet radiation protection – and has been awarded a rating of UPF 40+. The protection offered may be significantly reduced with extended wear or if the garment is stretched or wet. Any associated UV risks will vary according to individual skin type or medical history.

ANTI ODOUR SILVER

Garments treated with our Anti Odour Silver technology benefit from the natural antimicrobial properties of silver. Tiny traces of silver, distributed evenly throughout the garment, inhibit the growth of bacteria reducing mould and odour. This treatment is permanent – it will never wash or wear out.

DYNAMIC MOISTURE CONTROL™

DMC™ is a wicking treatment that rapidly spreads the moisture our bodies create across the surface area of a garment. This can be achieved through the technical construction of the garment or by a performance coating and ensures that the garment dries more quickly, encourages evaporative heat loss and helps you stay cooler and more comfortable for longer.

2 Secure Pockets

Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.

BRILLIANT

★★★★★

I buy this shirt SPECIFICALLY because it has "Poppers", so sorry James Baxter, I would stop if they ever went back to buttons!! I have approaching a dozen of these shirts and wear one every day, I use the front zipped pockets for my mobile phone and plastic card wallet. I still buy one even though I have a stock, because I like the colours, but I would agree that just a single a plain one might be useful. Continue the great work with this shirt and I am glad that I persuaded Scott Longstaff to ensure that the Poppers "USP" was mentioned in the details

The Best Shirt I've Owned

★★★★★

The Equator shirt feels comfortable in hot weather when I have a sweaty back, doesn't smell bad after wearing for days on end and is still in excellent condition a few years after I bought it. Since 2016, I've worn it regularly over a three-month trip and two month-long trips, as well as shorter trips in between.

I like it so much, I bought a second Equator shirt. I find the popper fastenings fiddly to fasten on the new version so prefer normal buttons, but it does mean I can quickly rip the shirt off without damaging it when my Superman outfit is required.

This shirt is well named

★★★★★

I have two of these and they are invaluable in hot weather, especially in the tropics where there is usually higher humidity than at home. I have the long-sleeved ones just for added protection from the sun. They are easy to roll up with a button to hold the sleeves in place and the zipped pockets are handy.

Was once the best shirt money could buy

★★☆☆☆

The Equator was a fantastic shirt. Great comfortable material, quick drying, tough enough to hand wash 200 times and wring out. Large useful secure pockets. It was my go to shirt and I had a few of them. I only used them on my treks some of which were 6 months. A single shirt would do the whole trip being washed every day.

Then the designers at Rohan thought it would be a great idea to replace buttons with the plastic fasteners one gets on an infant's rumpa suit. I bought a couple as my old faithful buttoned ones were finally starting to fail. The plastic poppers were hopeless and kept coming apart when I put my rucksack on or even stretched. This once great shirt is now only suitable for garden parties and gentle Condé Nast jaunts.

For the last few years I have looked at the Rohan website in the hope the designers or management have come to their senses and reintroduced the old fashion button variety of the Equator shirt. However in 2020 I am still disappointed not to see it.

Probably my favourite bit of Rohan kit

★★★★★

Great for travel, especially in hot countries - easy to wash, no ironing, and looks fairly smart. Zip pockets for security, sleeves can be fastened in rolled up position. Lasted 100+ washes without looking much the worse for wear. Also good for general wear in the UK, outside winter.

Long Sleeve Shirt For Hot And Humid Conditions

★★★★★

The long sleeve Equator Shirt is a perfect choice for hot and humid conditions. I have had many over the years, and they are very durable and long-lasting – I still wear some that are almost a decade old. I recently wore this shirt when exploring the Banda Islands - the spice islands of Maluku in Indonesia - it kept me cool and refreshed and protected me from a fierce sun. It is very versatile and can be worn for hiking, trekking, island and boat trips and is definitely presentable enough for a decent restaurant or theatre visit.

The material is a mixture of polyamide and polyester and feels very soft. It has Dynamic Moisture Control to prevent the shirt becoming soaked in sweat in extreme temperatures – it is far superior to a standard cotton shirt which is relatively useless in the heat. And the Silvadur odour control restricts the unpleasant smells which can occur when out all day in the sun – I have worn this shirt extensively and odours are thankfully kept to a minimum.

It can be washed and dried in a couple of hours, and needs no ironing as it does not crease at all. And at under 200g in weight, it is very easy to pack into a rucksack or suitcase.

There are no old-fashioned buttons on this shirt – instead, user-friendly popper fastenings make it much quicker to put on and take off. And the two external zipped pockets are very useful for storing items securely, plus they add to the impressive style and design of the shirt.

In addition, I have many short sleeve Equator Shirts – they are also fantastic. One benefit of the long sleeve one is it offers more protection from the sun, and you can simply role up the sleeves with the adjustable roll-up sleeve tabs – turning it into a short sleeve shirt!!

Equator Shirt

★★★★★

In my view the best shirt that Rohan do - so much so that over the years I have purchased 7 long sleeve ones and use them all. Add the one short sleeve and you can tell I like them! The lightweight popper fastenings introduced a couple of years back are great - much easier to use and better than the old buttons. A plain, non-check version would be a great addition to the range.
