It’s made from a blend of durable technical fabrics which feels like soft cotton and yet offering robust performance. Our technical Expedition Shirt has also been treated with Insect Shield®, a process which bonds Permethrin into the fabric converting clothing into long-lasting, effective and convenient insect protection.
The relaxed, comfortable fit provides good air circulation around the body. Long sleeves adjust from full length with tabs and the hem provides enough length to tuck in but still looks presentable when worn outside the waistband for greater ventilation.
Dynamic Moisture Control™ provides effective wicking to prevent stickiness, and the UPF 40+ sun protection* rating minimises the risk of sunburn.
Finally, there’s a hanging loop and Dryloops™ feature, so you can hang the Expedition Shirt up to dry overnight, wherever you are.
*A Note on Sun Protection
All Rohan garments carrying our sun protection icon have been tested in accordance with recognised international standards for ultraviolet radiation protection. Garments which meet the required standard are awarded a rating of UPF 40+. Protection may be significantly reduced with extended wear or if the garment is stretched or wet. Any associated UV risks will vary according to individual skin type or medical history.
*A Note on Insect Shield®
Insect Shield® technology converts clothing into convenient, comfortable and effective protection against biting insects. Each Insect Shield® labelled garment is treated with Permethrin, an invisible an odourless ingredient which protects against insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers and midges. The treatment is so tightly bonded to the fabric fibres that it retains effectiveness through the expected life of the product – well beyond the limits of most fabric finishes.
Fabric:
71% polyamide, 29% polyester with Dynamic Moisture Control™
We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.
Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

DMC™ is a wicking treatment that rapidly spreads the moisture our bodies create across the surface area of a garment. This can be achieved through the technical construction of the garment or by a performance coating and ensures that the garment dries more quickly, encourages evaporative heat loss and helps you stay cooler and more comfortable for longer.
Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.

This shirt is a pleasure to wear, and looks great, especially the colour. It is a type I have used successfully in hot climates, having enough space for ventilation, long sleeves and mosquito repellent built in. As a trip is unlikely this year, I nearly didn't buy this one, but it is now my favourite for general use, and walks.
I have been buying these shirts for a long time, the latest version appears to be lower quality less fabric panels, less triple stitching and the 100% polyamide material was more robust. The side entry zip pocket was easier to use. I wish the product changes were to develop and improve the design they all appear to be cost cutting. Otherwise this shirt could remain a winner. 5* for older design!
...one in green from a couple of years ago and one in blue in the last month. People talk about the sort of shirt you need in hot, humid conditions in the jungles and savannas across the globe, but you could be just like me - a bloke who likes technical gear and is naturally quite warm blooded - he wants a shirt, or indeed any piece of gear that breathes and keeps him cools, washes well, doesn't smell, is hardy enough for most walks wherever they might be. For me life is about layering and that layer might take to the pub, it might have me walking the dog in a pair of shorts in November or in the early evening of a clear summer's day with a chill in the air but equally it might have me up Moel Famau as the cloud drops low or in the Scottish Highlands on a trek. This is a great shirt - these days I find a lot of Rohan stuff just doesn't suit me but this and the older shirt I own, is magnificent. I love it and I'll buy more... I tend to buy Patagonia, Fjallraven and Orvis technical these days and this review might not go up because of that, but the simple fact is that the Expedition shirt is a piece of Rohan genius and should be applauded as such! Would recommend this shirt to anyone and at the price way more competitive that those mentioned above...
I completely agree with the positive comments by reviewer Steve, especially that the "shirt material (despite being quite thin) is very strong indeed". What I would like to add is that the Rohan description, and the weight, led me to expect a shirt that would feel warmer than the Expedition Shirt does. The name is well-chosen: it is a shirt that is less suitable for wear at home, when you sit still for much of the time.
The long sleeve Expedition Shirt is fantastic for all kinds of travel and adventure, but is probably at it’s best when put to the test against the elements of heat, humidity and a jungle environment. I recently used this shirt when trekking in the Borneo rainforest - viewing orangutans and other wildlife - it was tremendous in every way.
The soft and comfortable material is a mixture of polyamide and polyester, and the Dynamic Moisture Control keeps the shirt relatively dry – even if you are sweating a lot in the heat. It is difficult to assess how effective the Insect Shield treatment is, as I usually use my own insect spray in South East Asia, but it may well help to prevent insects coming to you – I hope it does!!
This shirt is a relaxed fit – there is room in it to allow for air to circulate around your body – vital in extreme humidity. Amazingly it only weighs 250g, and can be packed very easily into a suitcase or rucksack. And it can be washed and dried in a couple of hours – very important if you are trekking and need a quick clothing replacement.
I also like the short sleeve Expedition Shirt, but the long sleeve one is very good for activities such as jungle trekking as the long sleeves can protect you against cuts and scrapes from plants, trees and rocks. The shirt material (despite being quite thin) is very strong indeed – it survived my Borneo jungle adventure 100% intact. And, the long sleeves can be rolled up and held in place by adjustable roll-up sleeve tabs, so you can effectively wear it as a short sleeve shirt.
The durability and longevity of this shirt is incredible. I have two of them, and they can last many years in fantastic condition. Overall, if you are a very adventurous traveller, you should seriously consider getting this shirt – it is tremendous.
