The Full Story+

Engineered in such a way that each panel has been designed with the end use in mind, the Fjell Trousers are made for active outdoor use and based on the needs of mountaineers, hikers and explorers.

The trousers have been created with our hard-wearing Multiflex four-way stretch fabric, which along with the built-in bend at the knee, gives them a perfect fit and makes them incredibly comfortable to wear, day after day.

The knees, rear panel and hem have all been created with a high abrasion resistant, stretch fabric. In lab testing this exceeded 40,000 rubs – that will certainly allow for plenty of clambering and scrambling over rocky, rough surfaces. The two-way stretch also allows for natural movement of the body whilst walking and trekking. The rear panel stretches horizontally, whilst the knee panels stretches vertically.

There are a total of three secure zipped pockets all made with reinforced mesh, placed in highly convenient locations to suit a variety of needs. The two thigh pockets make accessing essentials a breeze when wearing a long jacket or coat, and they’re big enough to fit OS Maps. There’s also two drop in hand pockets on the waist, one zipped rear pocket and our trademark D-Ring on the belt loop.

The hems of the trousers have been designed with an expansion gusset; simply unzip to widen the lower leg to fit over bulky hiking boots or shoes. They’ve also been finished with extra reinforced anti-scuff tape ensuring longevity.

The polyamide, elastane blend of the Fjell Trousers make them incredibly durable, super stretchy and very comfortable, and the Durable Water Repellency finish they offer reassuring protection in light showers.

The only choice for intense trekking and hiking. The clever engineering of the Fjell Trousers make them supremely hard-wearing and comfortable ensuring unimpeded movement and long-lasting performance.

Engineered in such a way that each panel has been designed with the end use in mind, the Fjell Trousers – awarded Trail Magazine ‘Best in Test’ - are made for active outdoor use and based on the needs of mountaineers, hikers and explorers.

Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.

All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

Durable Water Repellency

Our DWR finish is an advanced treatment which dramatically increases the water repellency of our fabrics. On its own, it offers a useful level of shower resistance; used in conjunction with our Barricade technology, it reduces the tendency of the face fabric to wet out and maximizes breathability.

3 Secure Pockets

Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.

Gold standard Autumn to Spring trousers

I have used these a few times on modest, local walks in cool but ok conditions, where they of course excelled as comfortable and warm enough without being too warm.

However, I recently put them to a more stringent test on a night hike with scouts in pretty awful weather, with rain for half of the 14km route and intermittent winds of up to 42mph, followed by overnight camp, with plenty of opportunity to chill right down. It wasn't warm either at around 6-7 Celsius. The mud was terrible and was like walking in treacle. When the rain was light, the trousers shedded it no problem. When it was heavier or wind driven, I could feel it penetrating the fabric, but the trousers never wetted out or became saggy or uncomfortable and my body heat seemed to dry the fabric out fast. The fabric was snug to my legs but the stretch was perfect and never restrictive, whatever the extent of movement. I never got cold either and the fabric seemed very good at regulating temperature, even when getting hot on steeper sections.

I thought the fit at the ankle was great as they fit snugly over my boots.

I think they would be too warm from late Spring onward, unless in very poor weather and wouldn't be warm enough on their own if you were venturing into winter moors or mountains, but for the majority of damp, cool-mild, Autumn to Spring weather they would be perfect.

I like the use of panels in stretch and high abrasion areas and hope they will be as durable as they feel. Snagging on thorns or rubbing can be a major issue with synthetics but I fortunately haven't tested snagging and the trousers still look new after a few months use.

Comfort-wise they are outstanding and feel like a second skin rather than something I am working against. Pockets seem very practical and I used them to stash a few small items on walks where the top pockets seem to retain items well without being too restrictive to access. I never overload pockets as there is no way to keep trousers comfortable if you do.

The DWR finish will ultimately wear off of course, but hopefully it can be restored by a wash-in treatment, as I think it contributes greatly to the comfort in wet weather, allowing easy breathability but not letting the fabric wet out.

I am overall extremely pleased with the Fjells and consider them my ultimate walking trousers. They are expensive at full price but are a good example of you get what you pay for. I saved a bit in the sale.

Men's Fjell Trousers hit the spot

I've been looking for a new pair of "Weekend activity" trousers for a while. I've been using Fjallraven Vidda Pro recently but not really happy with them.

I spooted the Rohan Fjell trousers when I dropped into Covent garden for a browse.

Somewhat surprisingly to me they surpass the Fjallraven in every respect.

Look much smarter (Not that I care that much)

More comfortable, great fit

More practical pockets (for me)

Quick dry, will resist a light shower.

Buying a pair as a present today.

Excellent Quality

I seldom write reviews but thought I’d contribute on this as I was surprised at some of the poor reviews.

I’m constantly in search of good outdoor gear as I live on the rural west coast of Ireland and I’m outdoors most of the day in various terrain with my dog.

I had a recommendation for the Fjell by a friend of mine in the UK and I have been more than pleased with them.

Fit and comfort was excellent working around the yard as it was on the hills.

In the rain I did get wet but these are not a waterproof trousers so I expected it and was extremely surprised at how fast they dried.

I’ve been so pleased with them that I’ve ordered a second pair.

Very good product, although higher end cost I

still feel it was good value buy.

As a short man( 5’5” old money)it was good to have a trouser

that I didn’t have to turn up as if first day of school( in

a short leg).

Wore on a Scramble up Tryfan last week and were fine.

Mens Fjell trouser

Nice comfortable fit, may be too heavy for warm and hot weather, good at autumnal temperatures. Disappointed with the water repellent claims, got wet even in a light shower, had to wear waterproof over trousers, not what I was expecting therefore disappointed in Rohan’s claims.

Thank you for your feedback. Our Fjell Trousers have been designed to be worn in the colder months so we are pleased you have found them suitable for Autumnal temperatures. Although this style is not waterproof, the durable water repellency treatment should help you to stay dry in a light shower. However, when water on the outer layer is not beading up as well as it should, a reproofer will need to be applied.

Over priced Heavy Duty Outdoor Trousers

This is not only overpriced, but designed by someone who has very little or no experience of walking on the hills! Trousers design (I’ll fitting leg section) is common to all men’s trousers products fielded by Rohan. Photographic illustrations show ‘slim fitting’ legs, however quite different from reality. Nothing short of breaching the Treads Description Act!

What would have been ideal walking trousers for adverse weather conditions - certainly from the text description, falls woefully short.

I suggest the designers should look at Stretch Bags leg design then transfer this to this product and you’re almost home!

The above criticism can be applied to majority of Rohan men’s trousers promoted for the great outdoors!

Rohan .... you have lost your way! Or maybe you’re moving away from your original core business - Functional Outdoor Clothing.

By the way, I am not a new customer to Rohan, but have been using since 1979 - first product: Super Striders (Breeches).

Thanks for your review and comments on the Rohan trousers. Rohan continues to design and develop functional clothing for outdoor use. Our trousers are very popular and continue to be amongst walkers, hikers and our customers that enjoy the fit and fabric for the outdoors. The Fjell trousers have won a Trail magazine ‘Best in Test’ against many other brands, an award we are proud of. Our products are also tested in the environment they are designed for before we launch them in the UK so we can be sure of their long term suitability. Thank you for your continued support.

Disappointing - Only 3-season gear, less water repellent, heavy and expensive

I’ve been wearing Rohan Multiflex walking trousers for over 35 years and they have always been my leg wear of choice on the fells in winter. I recently bought two pairs of Fjells to replace my trusty Summit trousers that have reached the end of their lives. The Summits replaced my Striders, which Rohan in many guises made for years.

The Fjells are undeniably comfortable trousers but, whereas the Multiflex fabric of the Summits, and Striders before them, had a fleecy or looped backing, the Fjells are smooth. This makes them noticeably less warm in use. They have also proved to be less water repellent in mizzle and low cloud making me resort to overtrousers while my wife remained dry in her old Troggings alone. I find this change in the nature of the fabric very curious and annoying, especially when the Fjells are advertised as winter walking trousers – Sorry but no, these are at best 3-season trousers.

I’ve rarely had to resort to long-johns under my Rohan trousers, even when winter mountaineering, but I think it seems unavoidable with these Fjells.

The final annoying aspects are that the Fjells are 20% heavier than my Summit trousers and my Striders (38 Long Fjells are 600g whereas 38 Long Summit and Striders are 500g) and, full price, they are very expensive.

There was a time when Rohan had cutting edge designs that users could rely on for all year mountaineering and hill walking. Please take a look at the old designs and materials, learn why they were loved and why they did the job so well and only change them if you really understand the environment in which they are used – high on the British mountains in wind, low cloud, mist, snow and driving rain.

Thank you for your feedback. Great to hear you have been wearing Rohan for over 35 years. All our garments are wear tested in the environments that they designed for. We have a variety of outdoor professionals and enthusiasts who provide essential feedback for us. Sorry to hear that you have not found the Fjell trousers suitable, you may wish to consider the Men's Troggings as an alternative. Please do contact customer service should you require any further help.

Men's Fjell Stretch Trekking Trousers Review

I have worn them as my 'walk everywhere' trousers over the last twelve months. However, although I thought they were winter trekking trousers, I found them too thin for true winter use without a pair (or two) of merino union 200 leggings underneath.

As mentioned by another reviewer, the pockets do not offer much protection to the skin from keys and the like, which can be annoying when used without a merino underlayer, but easy to work around by carrying such items in the rear pocket or elsewhere. Another pocket issue is that the material used, although clearly very durable, wore the edges off my mobile phone cover, confirming it has a distinctly abrasive nature, although I guess it took many hundreds of kilometres before this showed as an issue.

Another observation is that the external surface of the cloth used in their construction has very poor resistance to briar and bramble thorn attack, my pair having now acquired a multitude of tufts where the material surface has pulled. However, this is quite a tough challenge and no holes as such have appeared. In order to reduce such damage I have now purchased a pair of heavy duty gaiters which will at least protect the lower leg from further damage.

Given the considerable off-road mileage which I have subjected these trousers to, the ease with which they wash and tumble dry whilst retaining their water resistance, and the comfort that I experience every day whilst wearing them, I decided to order a second pair which I will use for 'special occasions' whilst retaining my patina'd pair for the more strenuous scrambles in the wilds.

Overall, I would thoroughly recommend these trousers despite the issues noted above.

Performs above it's intended use range

I wore these snowshoeing at -6C (21F) just to see how it would be. It was a calm sunny day with about 1/2 meter of fresh powder, but usually I would wear my ski pants or a pair of winter sport tights. After 3 hours, I was still warm, dry, and comfortable. I never expected them to perform so well in such a demanding application.

They fit to size and I haven't spotted any manufacturing issues.

Great Trousers

These are great trousers for winter hiking, I like the multiple front leg pockets, narrow ankles and the 2 deep front pockets.

Originally ordered short 32" waist, as I wear 32" stretch bags, but returned to have short 30" waist instead, now a perfect fit.

As stated by other reviewer, I don't understand why the knees are only single thickness but not caused any problems.

Excellent trousers

Got these as a replacement for a faulty pair of summit trousers (very unusual for Rohan and superb customer service) which I loved, but these are even better. Haven’t had chance to wear them on the hill yet, but I have walked a few hundred miles around town in all kinds of weather and they’ve been outstanding. Really comfortable and rugged, good pockets and surprisingly warm enough on UK winter days (also in resort in the Alps) but they aren’t too warm like the winter jeans/winter fusion trousers which are too warm to wear inside. I’ve been out some fairly windy days and they’ve felt fine, and the DWR is ok for a fine drizzle but anything heavier (even moderate rain) and it wets out within 5-10mins and the trousers get wet. They do, however dry out astonishingly fast for such a thick trouser though. They are now my first choice for general winter wear or if I’m doing anything ‘rugged’ outside like bushcraft, gardening, scrambling etc or walking on clear days. For general walking though where there’s not much chance of damaging your trousers I’d still use my Dry Requisites which are excellent and fully waterproof

Excellent trousers

I have two pairs of these Fjell trousers which i’ve swapped week by week for two months now. The fit is superb and with a choice of leg lengths you can get close to ideal. The material seems durable and certainly warm enough even at 1°C on the moor. Two downsides for me:-

1. The DWR coating didn’t last long.

2. I’d like a thicker material on the inside of the pockets. When I put my keys in my pocket I get a really cold “hit” against my thigh!

A 5 star product. Just what I expect from Rohan

Fjell trousers.

I wore my new Fjell trousers on the hill yesterday for the first time.

Great fit, great comments from my mates and really comfi’.

There was a really cold strong wind and the trousers were warm and super wind proof-except for the knees!!

The stretchy knee fabric just does not have the same protection as the rest of these otherwise brilliant trousers.

This is the first criticism I have ever had for the many, many Rohan products I own. Shame!

Review of men’s Fjell trousers

Having been a keen walker for over 40 years I can say with confidence that these are the best trousers I’ve ever used out on the hills. They are definitely made for autumn/winter/spring days; there is plenty stretch in the material which makes them really comfortable for scrambling. I’ve not tried them on a wet day yet, but look forward to rain/snow to complete my test.
