The Full Story+

One of the toughest tasks we've given to our designers in recent times was to develop a more ‘active’ version of our classic Bags trousers.

We asked them to design a pair of trousers which offered greater freedom of movement for adventurous walkers and trekkers.

The brief was to stay true to the original Bags design concept and create protective, packable, mountain expedition legwear retaining all the key signature features such as the pocket layout, an accessory D-ring, the side expansion panels for extra pocket capacity and comfort, and the reinforced knee and seat panels for durability.

We've taken a tried and tested material from our existing trouser range - a super-tough technical fibre with elastane and Dynamic Moisture Control - and used it to make our new Stretch Bags.

They’re still highly wind resistant, high wicking, quick drying and offer a UPF 40+ sun protection* but the stretch now allows  a greater freedom of movement enabling them to handle just about any activity you can throw at them.

*A Note on Sun Protection

All Rohan garments which carry our sun protection icon, have been tested in accordance with recognised international standards for ultraviolet radiation protection. As a guide to the level of protection offered to covered areas, garments are awarded a rating of UPF 40+. Protection may be significantly reduced with extended wear or if the garment is stretched or wet; the reduction of associated health risks will vary with other factors such as skin type or individual medical history.

Fabric: 94% Polyamide, 6% Elastane

Lightweight - Weight: 355g
Lightweight - Weight: 355g

We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.

Packable - Pack Size: 880ml
Packable - Pack Size: 880ml

Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.

Fast Drying - Drying Time: 6 hours
Fast Drying - Drying Time: 6 hours

All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

Dynamic Moisture Control™

DMC™ is a wicking treatment that rapidly spreads the moisture our bodies create across the surface area of a garment. This can be achieved through the technical construction of the garment or by a performance coating and ensures that the garment dries more quickly, encourages evaporative heat loss and helps you stay cooler and more comfortable for longer.

Sun Protection UPF 40+

This garment has been tested in accordance with recognised international standards for ultraviolet radiation protection – and has been awarded a rating of UPF 40+. The protection offered may be significantly reduced with extended wear or if the garment is stretched or wet. Any associated UV risks will vary according to individual skin type or medical history.

4 Secure Pockets

Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.

I’ve been a fan of « bags » since their original appearance, this iteration continues, what remains to me, a winning formula. I like the latest colours, which are easy to match with other favourites.

Mens Stretch Bags

Great trousers for hillwalking. Surprisingly tough material lasting well. Have used for approach cycles, Munro walking and rock climbing.

Smart, comfortable, stretchy, practical. Good zip pockets.

Only suggestion for improvement is to have another loop of material to secure the D ring in place as it just usually gets lopsided.

Review of stretch bags

Good fit .and feel .Agree with others re the pointless studs at the sides. will have to test wear .Had the original bags then a design change meant I could not get a fit so surprised these suited.

Thank you for your feedback regarding the Stretch Bags. We are pleased that you have found a suitable fit in this style and hope you will enjoy wearing them. Please kindly be advised, the studs at the sides are simply for a extra amount of expansion and added comfort when wearing.

Great Trousers

I have been wearing Bags for probably 40 years and have always found them very comfortable, except when my waist measurement started fluctuating as I got older. So much so that I would buy the next size up and get my wife to elasticate the waistband to accommodate this.

Having now found STRETCH BAGS, I find them even more comfortable than the originals, and have bought 4 pairs in the last year. I wear them for all occasions and purposes.

I'm not sure how well the new material will wear, I have some Striders, which although heavier weight soft shell, have been worn in colder weather for many years when hill walking, rambling and cross country skiing, and these look as if they will last for some time yet!!! So hopefully the stretch bags will do as well!?

As someone once said "Bags are the thinking man's jeans", and Stretch Bags are similarly stretch jeans! You can wear them anywhere!

I saw that one reviewer said they kept their phone in one of the rear pockets.WHY? when there are deep hand and zipped pockets that are ideal for keeping a phone in.

Modern take on a classic

I like trousers with a bit of room in the fit rather than those that cling and feel restrictive around the thighs and behind.

I always liked the design of the original bags but when I tried them I just couldn't get on with the close fit and lack of flex in the material, although I do like the airlight fabric in other garments.

When I tried the stretch bags I knew straight away they had the fit I wanted. They are a comfortable fit, neither loose nor too snug, but flex really well when sitting or moving so they don't restrict movement or pull the waistband down etc.

I like the breathability of the synthetic material and the practical pockets, although it isn't comfortable to put bulky or heavy objects in the pockets.

I have used them on walks in milder Autumn and Winter weather, where they have been comfortable and I think they would also work well in cooler Summer conditions. In cold Winter conditions you would need a bit more warmth. I would therefore wear them most of the year.

My only reservation with some synthetics is how they stand up to a bit of abrasion and catching on thorns or other snags, or even velcro fastenings. So far this has not been tested but I hope they are resistant. Some fabrics are terrible in this regard.

Wouldn't buy again

The quality of the material is not the same as the 'normal' bags - made of polyamide and elastacine

Thank you for your review. Although our Stretch Bags are made from a different fabric, this does not mean the quality of the fabric has been compromised. The Polyamide and Elastane allows the Stretch Bags to be really durable with added stretch, making them perfect for activities that require freedom of movement. Our Iconic Bags are made from our Airlight Fabric and these are still available to purchase.

Stretch bags didn't stretch smoothly...

I bought these to replace a pair that have lasted me for thirty years. Although I like them I have two reservations. The fabric is quite unlike that of the regular 'bags'; it feels slightly coarser to the extent that it ruffles the hairs on my legs. My classic bags, whichI I bought a couple of ears ago, do not make their presence feel like this. The profile too, is very different. These new ones, taper, noticeably. That, combined with the different fabric, makes the new ones feel very different when wearing. I'm anxious about what they feel will like in the winter over a pair of (Rohan) Long Johns. So, if you really like a more spacious bag I'd avoid these. It might test unduly the strength of the fabric if you have steep steps or rocks over which clamber. I guess it would help if Rohan could display a profile diagram showing the circumference at the ankle and above and below the knee.

Thank you for your review. Our Stretch Bags are made from Multiflex Light fabric (94% polyamide, 6% elastane) allowing extra stretch and movement whereas our Bags are made from Rohan Airlight fabric (48% cotton, 52% polyester) and so these styles will feel different. Our Stretch Bags are ideal for scrambling or climbing order turnstiles so you should find these suitable.

Men's stretch bags

Over the years I have bought a lot of Rohan gear and have never been disappointed, however, whilst these trousers are good in every other respect, I have found that after wearing a very few times the material has snagged in an increasing number of places and the visible threads will not go away. I am very careful with how I treat them but both pairs have failed in this respect. Previous bags, of which I have had many over the years, have never had this defect and I find it very disappointing to have spent £160 on these.

Thank you for your feedback, the Stretch Bags are made from a polyamide fabric which is durable. Customer Service will be in contact to discuss this further.

Men’s Stretch Bags

I bought by first pair of bags in the early eighties. Since then Rohan has been my brand of choice for non formal clothing. Not sure why it’s taken me 40 years to write my first review but better late than never! Like all the clothing I’ve bought over this period the stretch bags do what it says on the tin - perform well in all settings, look good (even after being washed in a hotel bathroom), and have great, secure pockets. So what’s not to like!

These would be great pants but the build quality is poor. Specifically, the polyester within the pockets is not finished, so it frays and gets stuck in the zippers.

Another excellent product.

Have eyed-up Rohan bags for many years, since seeing them as 'the outdoor' trouser when I was in my teens. Finally bought a pair recently, opting for the stretch version in coal. Was delighted with the colour and the fit and the overall appearance is of a smart outdoor activity trouser. They passed their next test when they proved themselves good for cycling in - the stretch gives unrestricted movement and the close fit keeps them from catching the chain. However, they didn't manage to keep off the chill in the, admittedly, sub-zero temperatures (perhaps the winter version would fair better?), leaving me keen to test properly their wind resistance properties. The sleek design does bring one potential drawback. Despite there being numerous pocket options, the pockets, as others have noted, seem of limited capacity and finding a suitable place for even my relatively small mobile 'phone took several attempts. But very comfortable, light-weight trousers with which I am so far very pleased.

best everyday functional trousers

Strongly recommended: having worn Airlight Bags since 1982 as my preferred legwear in all but the coldest conditions, the Stretch Bags fabric is an improvement until above about 15o C, when they become a little too warm. They are outstandingly comfortable for my lanky shape, versatile, robust and durable. The stretch fabric blocks the wind very effectively and dries quickly. The other great advantage is the consistency of the fit- just like the original Bags rather than the erratic sizing of the current Airlight Bags.

Good, but there's an elephant in my trousersers

There's lots to like about these Stretch Bags. My 34" waist, long leg pair fit very well around the waist and, holy of holies, really are long enough in the leg for me. The stretch fabric is stretchy in the right directions, is comfortable next to the skin, repels drizzle and dries quickly enough when it fails to Terrific! But there is an elephant in the room, if not the trousers (they aren't *that* stretchy).

The issue for me is that the design of Bags has stayed constant but the things I want to put in my pockets hasn't; my mobile phone just doesn't sit comfortably anywhere. It's too large to fit in the front pockets for anything other than a short period while stood up and not at all sat down, and it doesn't work at all for me in the rear pockets. Bags were designed as a travel trouser, and I travel with a mobile phone; or not, at least not in these.

Now that might sound as though I'm saying they aren't much good but I'm not; for what they are, they're fine. Just wear something else with a big enough pocket for your mobile. Whether you want to is a decision you'll have to make yourself.

All of this could be solved by putting a cargo pocket on one of the legs, but then those trousers wouldn't be Bags but something else, and it doesn't really do to mess with a classic design.

So, a mixed reception from me. They're good but they are no longer the first choice they once were, even with the excellent stretch fabric. Four stars.

Really light and comfortable

I had been through a few hiking trousers from other companies before I bought a pair of these. Easily the best I've used. The material is light and stretchy, but has a sort of textured feel that is pretty rugged. Pockets are great - I've never seen the point of "cargo style" pockets on the thigh which look rubbish and are uncomfortable to walk in if you put anything substantial in there. Where I live it rains constantly but these dry really quickly. The one thing I would say is that Willow is much greener that I imagined it would be - it's basically just a pale green. It's okay, but I would prefer something more in a light grey. I hope they bring out something like that in the future.

My go-to everyday trousers

I'm not completely convinced about calling these "soft shell" as I generally associate that as meaning "will keep off a shower" and these won't because of the DMC coating. That's not really a criticism because it means they're more comfortable in the dry (DWR coatings stop sweat spreading out to evaporate as well as stopping rain drops soaking, you choose, you lose), and if they do get wet they're still fairly comfy (much better than Bags in that respect) and dry out very fast.

The only thing that keeps them off 5 stars is the pocket gusset is smaller than the standard Bags so the popper at the hip is pretty much pointless, making no real difference if it's done up or not, but that doesn't stop them being very comfortable and very useful trousers. They're fine for a dander, I can cycle in them for up to about 40 miles and not regret not using "proper" padded cycling kit, they're smart enough for work and fine for slounging around at home.

I'd like to see a Shorts version (with the original Bags Shorts length) too, and I'd also like the rather smart purple that the ladies get!

Just taken delivery of my new Dark Petrol stretch bags - they are now my fourth pair of stretch bags! As with their older blue, brown and green pairs already in my wardrobe, they are exceedingly comfortable and deliver what Rohan said they would. The new Dark Petrol trousers look great when paired with my Blue Shadow Equator Shirt - so they can look smart casual as well as being great for walking and general everyday wear. Great for climbing

I was after a pair of trousers for climbing and tracking. I used them for two mornings climbing in Kuala Lumpur and they were idea as they are seriously stretchy whilst maintaining that Rohan style.

One snag is that the stretchiness means that an iPhone in the rear pocket makes it really sag. A improvement for an updated version of these would be to a less stretchy fabric in the seat area whilst maintaining agility in the leg.

Great garment with interesting drying properties

I purchased my first Rohan-wear in the early 1980s (Rohan Bags designed for rock climbers). I have recently returned from a 2200+ mile, 10 week bike packing/touring trip from Lands End to the north of the Shetland Islands. I purchased Rohan-wear for the trip because for almost four decades I have known it to (uniquely?) combine properties that are critical to me (far more than style or fashion) robustness, packability, low weight and drying speed.

The Rohan stretch bags did exactly what they were designed to do. Great for both on and off the bike. I wore them every day for most of the 10 weeks. It was not a warm or hot summer for a cyclist this year.

On the trip I discovered , for the first time in four decades, the peculiar drying properties of Rohan synthetic based garments (I took several with me) which frustrated and delighted me in equal measures. I still cannot decide whether my delight is more than my frustration or visa versa. I think it depends on the garment.

I refer to the fact that the Rohan stretch bags (and other garments) have awesomely quick drying times when I wear them. I could cycle into rain knowing that although the trousers would almost immediately wet out, they would be dry within 30 mins (or sooner in warmer weather) of the rain ending if I kept cycling. This is delightful.

What I found frustrating was that when doing a laundry session at a camp site or hostel, my attempts to quickly dry the bags or just speed up the drying of the bags (or other Rohan synthetic garments) by using the hand dryer in the gents washroom, met with total failure. At best the dryer simply forced a spray of water from the bags up into my face. I eventually gave up in trying to make these garments dry any faster than they wanted to dry, and would sometimes wear them damp (they didn’t dry over-night in a tent) knowing they would dry in 30 mins if I tolerated the evaporative cooling (it is quite cool in the Shetland islands) while cycling or going walkabout.

This is not a complaint. I assume the physics of garments means they either dry quickly one way or another, but not in every way. It would be fascinating to know more about how garments dry and how and why the drying (or non-drying) properties of Rohan synthetic garments compares and contrasts with, for example, Marino wool or cotton .. which while having longer drying times on the body or when hung out to dry, have awesomely quick drying times when shuffled under a hand dryer.

I like these trousers (for the stretch) and am considering purchasing a second pair for my next bike-packing trip, which will probably be to the Artic Circle and back. In cool and cold climates I need a second pair of long trousers to wear when one pair is still damp from washing it.

Very Stretchy Trousers

The Stretch Bags are incredibly stretchy trousers – the material’s mix of polyamide and elastane offers a lot of freedom when doing action-based activities such as walking on uneven surfaces or mountain trekking. At about 350g in weight they can be packed easily into a bag or suitcase, and can be washed and dried in three or four hours with no ironing required – very handy when travelling.

There are many storage options, with two zipped pockets at the front, two zipped pockets at the rear, two hand pockets and side expansion panels which offer extra storage space. Also, there is an accessory D-ring which can hold keys. The pockets hold a surprising amount of items – very functional, especially when doing a long day of hiking or trekking.

I have only had these trousers for a couple of weeks, but they seem to be very tough and durable with reinforced seat and knee panels to make these areas stronger. I used them for two days of mountain trekking in South Sulawesi, Indonesia - the material was breathable at lower altitudes where it was warmer (although at times the trousers did feel a little hot), and also provided very good wind protection in more exposed areas when higher up the mountain.

The Escapers Trousers have been my favourite Rohan trousers for a long time, and I rate them a little above the Stretch Bags. The Escapers have slightly thinner material (which is more breathable in hot and humid conditions such as in South East Asia), and they can be worn for relatively formal occasions such as restaurants and the theatre – probably not the case with the Stretch Bags as they are designed more like cargo pants.
