The Full Story+

Our high performance, versatile expedition trousers are lightweight, durable and with stretch built in and with articulation darts, they give a really comfortable fit with great freedom of movement.

There’s an adjustable and removable belt, and plenty of pockets. There are two zipped pockets on the thighs, one is a handy side seam pocket big enough to fit an OS map, and the other is a patch pocket that’s great for quick-access to niggly items like cash and keys. There are also two hip pockets and one rear pocket, all of which are zipped. In short, there’s plenty of space for everyday essentials.

Insect Shield® technology provides long-lasting, effective and convenient insect protection against most pesky bugs. It's bonded tightly to the fabric fibres and will retain its effectiveness through the life of the product. Add Sun Protection UPF 40+ and Dynamic Moisture Control™, and you’ve got the perfect hot-weather trouser.

The Trailblazer fabric's advanced fusion of tough polyamide and stretchy elastane offers an unbeatable combination of freedom of movement and great long-term durability.

All this technology has combined to create a pair of trekking trousers that’ll stand up to any challenge, be it an afternoon amble through the Peak District or a five day trek in the Picos de Europa.

Fabric: Multiflex Light™ (94% polyamide, 6% elastane) with Dynamic Moisture Control™

Lightweight - Weight: 350g
Lightweight - Weight: 350g

We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.

Packable - Pack Size: 950ml
Packable - Pack Size: 950ml

Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.

Fast Drying - Drying Time: 4 hours
Fast Drying - Drying Time: 4 hours

All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

INSECT SHIELD®

Insect Shield® technology converts clothing into convenient, comfortable and effective protection against biting insects. Each garment is treated with permethrin – an invisible and odourless ingredient that helps protect against insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers and midges.

SUN PROTECTION UPF 40+

This garment has been tested in accordance with recognized international standards for ultraviolet radiation protection – and has been awarded a rating of UPF 40+. The protection offered may be significantly reduced with extended wear or if the garment is stretched or wet. Any associated UV risks will vary according to individual skin type or medical history.

DYNAMIC MOISTURE CONTROL™

DMC™ is a wicking treatment that rapidly spreads the moisture our bodies create across the surface area of a garment. This can be achieved through the technical construction of the garment or by a performance coating and ensures that the garment dries more quickly, encourages evaporative heat loss and helps you stay cooler and more comfortable for longer.

5 Secure Pockets

Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.

2019 Trailblazers

★★★☆☆

I have been meaning to write to add to the adverse comments about the changes in the pocket design, and this morning my phone fell out of righthand thigh pocket twice, yes I could have zipped it up, but that wasn't necessary on the older version – the new righthand thigh pocket is not an improvement, significantly less useful than on the earlier version. The left thigh pocket is narrower, not as deep as before, and therefore less useful.

I think it's unnecessary to have zips on the hand pockets, the zipped inner hand pocket on the previous version was useful, but I cannot see why you would ever want to zip up the regular hand pockets.

That apart, the trousers are comfortable, and I wear a pair most days, but the new design of the thigh pockets never ceases to annoy …

Hi Peter, thank you leaving a review on our Trailblazers. I shall pass your feedback onto our relevant department.

My latest Trailblazers

★★★★☆

I have just bought my third? pair. They are my goto trousers for adventure travel, hillwalking and rock climbing.

Likes- the stretch and the bug resistance, zips on the front pockets on the latest incarnation and the number of pockets.

Dislikes- The pocket on the right thigh now has a zip on the side seam with the pocket itself on the front of the thigh. This will be ok,for eg travel docs ( one day!), but if you put anything of substance in this pocket it rubs on the front of the thigh when out hillwalking, limiting the use of the pocket. Please can Rohan return to two side pockets in the next redesign.

Hi Christopher, thank you for taking the time to leave a review on our Trailblazers. Glad to hear that you are happy with the majority of the design. I shall pass your feedback on to the relevant department in regards to the pocket.

First Trailblazers

★★★★★

I have had many Rohan trousers over the years, my favourite is still the Grand Tour Chino, but the Trailblazers have definitely performed well over the summer. Whether walking the dog, or just enjoying the hills, visiting cities and towns or driving. Haven’t had the opportunity this year to use on international travel. A good effort from Rohan and would like more colour choice. Will look for in sales.

Trailblazers

★★★★☆

Just recently bought the latest version of Trailblazers. I've had several pairs of these over the years with sufficient time between each purchase to take stock of the various design tweaks, not all of them for the better. This latest version is still basically sound in that they are comfortable to wear and easy to launder. Still plenty of pockets (despite losing one of the back ones) and glad to see zips have returned to the front pockets. The claim that an OS map can be fitted in one of the pockets is simply not true. Past faults on previous versions included weak zips on the fly and one pair was a bit short in the leg despite being labelled as my usual size, but this seems to have been addressed. All-in-all a pretty good design.

Men's Trailblazers

★★★☆☆

I have owned these trousers for around 18 months and have found them very comfortable, lightweight and quick drying. Those are the positives.

However, for me there are two negatives: the zip 'tags' on the thigh pockets flap about and are unnecessary, so I took them off. This was a minor gripe.

More significantly, and I accept that this will not be an issue for many wearers but could be relevant to some, the protection from the sun afforded by the material has not been adequate. I suffer from polymorphic light eruption, although this only effects the skin on my thighs and lower torso. If exposed to sunlight my skin becomes inflamed and intensely itchy, a condition that usually subsides after a few weeks.

These trousers do not provide adequate protection against sunlight, even whilst being active, and therefore seem a bit overpriced.

As I say, probably a concern for very few would be purchasers, but something to bear in mind.

Great fit

★★★★★

I went for a size smaller than I have in the Lowlands due to them being soooo stretchy around the waist, they’re not as stretchy as the Lowland but fit perfectly, plenty of pockets, However I’m not sure about the vertical one on the right thigh, would have preferred a horizontal one, Plus i would have preferred a waist button instead of a popper, but these are only minor points, and wouldn’t stop my buying another pair.

Trailblazers in use

★★★★☆

I had been looking at the Trailblazers for some time and purchased during a sale at reasonable price, I have Bags, and Outlanders, I expected these to be along those lines but they are more suited to warmer hikes, they are very comfortable light and stretchy, I find the number of pockets ample but why all the zips with rubber tags? a couple of internal security pocket zips would be fine, I ordered a 32R which is normally a bit small for me but as these have some give they are a perfect fit and lenght, easy wash and dry, I would recommend these as a warm weather hiking trouser and theyy will do a good job.

Men's Trailblazers Walking Trousers, Medium

★★★★★

I have owned around 10 pairs of Trailblazers over the years and they are my go to trouser for most weathers and I do rate them 5 stars. Quality & Value is 3 out of 5 and I will explain why. I like the version that has two zipped hand pockets, two zipped thigh pockets that are symmetrical in terms of position and one rear zipped pocket. Current version moves the position of one of the thigh pockets and I'm not yet convinced.

The fit is baggy for me, in Medium and I love this. I wear them for long haul travel and can walk, work and sleep in them in perfect comfort. The thigh pocket will take a water bottle or a mobile phone with ease. Things in the thing pocket will bounce against the knee that can be annoying.

At one point a version came out with the zip on the left hand pocket removed, meaning one side of the hand pocket was no longer secure. Various Rohan shops communicated "design feedback" "how brutal the design team are about cutting things" or "cost cutting" as reasons why. None were credible reasons for keeping a pocket and removing the zip.

The lining of the pockets has improved in the latest version with solid material at the bottom of the right pocket. Early versions had a mesh lining that was incredibly prone to getting holed by pocket contents and a hole that opened from a small annoyance to a content losing gap during the course of a day almost made me turn my back on Rohan such was the annoyance of such a design flaw. Having to do a pocket material inspection on a pair of high GBP trousers is hugely disappointing.

They dry fast, pack small and bounce back from being folded, scrunched or bundled around with ease.

Colours seem to have removed the darkest for now and this is a shame. A balance of light and dark colours is needed in any range. For trousers for highly active wear, the lighter colours get marked and dirty very swiftly, whereas the darker colours look better for longer.

Despite the failures over the versions, I live in Trailblazers and will work through the problems for the overall benefit. At GBP 90 with flaws that seem to be tested on paying customers, I will no longer pay full price for Trailblazers, waiting for a sales to come round.

Best ever

The perfect fit I have been looking for the past 40 years. Good in all weather if you're warm blooded like me - BUT why o why can't they make them without the insect shield. Would happily buy 5 pairs at full price if they could make them as "ordinary" trousers.

Perfect Lightweight Hiking Trousers

★★★★★

Lightweight, Quick-drying, 5 zipped pockets and VERY importantly have a little more room in the knees, than the Rohan Bags, meaning these are excellent for purpose trousers. Great pity they don't come in Black otherwise I'd have bought a couple more pairs.

I call them 4 season trousers as I very rarely wear heavy Winter trousers, preferring instead to wear a pair of thermal long-johns underneath, and there is room with these trousers to do that.

Review of 2019 version Trailblazer Trousers

★★★★☆

Bought a pair of Trailblazers in Sept 2018, and they have been a great success. I also use it for archery where multiple pockets for glasses, scorecards etc are reallt useful.

Having lost weight I needed to get another pair in next waist size down, so bought new pair (Aug 2019).

Worn a few times now.

You only get 5 pockets on 2019 version as opposed to 7 on last years. It's lost one of the back pockets, and the other is now 3cm shallower.

The side pockets are both zipped ,whereas last years had a inner zipper pocket on right. I preferred the inner zip as you could keep valuebles secure while rest of pock is still useable for quick access.

The right thigh pocket (with horizontal zip) has been replaced by side seam zipped pocket which Rohan claim is "big enough to fit an OS map".

Yes you can just fit it in by forcing it and and damaging you map, and then its hard to get out. The previous top zipped pocket allowed you to slip map in and out easily with one hand. If you are tall you can't zip the side pocket up with one hand and have to bend down and grab fabric with other hand.

Apart from the zipped side pockets the others changes are retrograde.

I contacted Rohan to see if they had any of 2018 model trousers left in my size and there was only 1 in green (a colour I don't like anyway).

Rohan - Trailblazers et al

★★★★★

I have been buying and wearing Rohan since the 1970s when the bags first appeared, advertised in the Sunday Times Colour Supplement and there was only one outlet in Long Preston. I have bought and worn Rohan ever since. It serves me well, is exceptionally practical, easy to wash and no ironing! I am wearing Rohan most days. It has kept me warm and dry at the top of Kilimanjaro, cool and fresh in Beijing in the summer and Brisbane at Christmas. The Trailblazers are very practical and lightweight. Most of Rohan gear is. My only criticism is the Regular leg length used to be 32" now it seems to be 31". I may only be 5' 6" tall but my waiste is 32" and my inside leg 32". Some trousers said to be regular and therefore 31", such as the Overlanders, are actually longer than is said! Many are too short. Of course there is a solution, by long, but its a pain to go off to a seamstress! If it is a a new potential Rohan customer reading this then take the plunge, you will not regret it. Great gear, smart, practical, functional and it lasts for years and years! Whether it is socks, underwear, T shirts, tops or trousers and of course the down coats! I am not paid by Rohan to write this!

Been wearing my first pair since last year, just bought two more pairs

★★★★★

I'm a Rohan trousers fan. I've been wearing nothing but for the past four years. Of my eight pairs, Trailblazers are my favorite summer pants. I live in an a heavily insect infested area (Vermont USA) and I appreciate not being swarmed by mosquitoes or finding ticks crawling up my legs when I return from walking the dog in the woods.

As with most Rohan trousers, I also appreciate the many zippered pockets -- especially good when traveling in areas with active pickpockets.

As for size, I know what to order from Rohan but, for newer customers, I'd recommend buying a size smaller than you might expect from another company.
