The Full Story+

This men’s waterproof jacket is a waterproof to end all waterproofs.

Using 3-layer Barricade™ Knit waterproof technology, the Helix men’s rain jacket can withstand even the wettest of weather.

For a jacket to be labelled waterproof, it needs to have a Hydrostatic Head —the level of water a rain jacket can withstand before water gets in—of 1,500mm.

But we know, when it’s wet outside, waterproofing is not something you want to compromise on. So, this men’s waterproof jacket has an impressive Hydrostatic Head of 20,000mm. Essentially, it’ll keep you bone dry, all day, day after day.

Normally, that level of waterproofing comes with the loss of breathability. But we know breathability can be the difference between staying comfortable all day long and feeling clammy after only a few minutes. So, we didn’t want to compromise on that either.

The men’s Helix rain jacket has a Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate—the amount of moisture vapour that can pass through fabric—of 20,000g per metre square every 24 hours. So, it’s the best of both worlds—super waterproof and super breathable.

And because there’s no point in having all of the features with none of the functionality, the Helix jacket is designed to be easy to pack and travel with. With a built in Packpocket™, the jacket packs into itself and takes up minimal space in your luggage. So, if your outdoor adventures are taking place on the other side of the world, the jacket can come with you.

And the pocket isn’t just for packing. We’ve including one internal zipped pocket and two external hand pockets which are big enough for an OS map and feature YKK Aquaguard® zips, so neither you nor your things get wet.

The men’s waterproof jacket doesn’t just keep out the rain, it’s windproof too. For added protection from the elements, the jacket has a dropped rear hem, adjustable hem and cuffs, and a fixed hood with a bonded peak, which can be rolled away when not needed. We can’t control the weather, but we can at least stop it getting to you.

Many of us head to the great outdoors to escape the busyness and bustle of daily life, so the last thing we want is a squeaky jacket cramping the mood. But, that’s often the case when it comes to waterproofs. Again, we couldn’t compromise on that. This men’s rain jacket is waterproof without the noise, rustle and whoosh and instead uses fabric that keeps things quiet. It’s also super soft and stretchy offering complete freedom of movement and comfort.

Last but not least, it’s lightweight. We’ve packed all these features into a waterproof jacket that doesn’t weigh you down.

Fabric: 100% polyester with 3-layer Barricade™ Knit technology and Durable Water Repellency™

Lightweight - Weight: 367g
Lightweight - Weight: 367g

We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.

Packable - Pack Size: 1075ml
Packable - Pack Size: 1075ml

Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.

Fast Drying - Drying Time: 6 hours
Fast Drying - Drying Time: 6 hours

All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

3-layer Barricade™ knit waterproof technology

Our 3-layer Barricade™ knit waterproof technology is used to make raincoats that are ultra-waterproof yet breathable. The three-layer design bonds together a water-repellent outer fabric, a breathable membrane and a moisture-wicking lining.

The fabric has a Hydrostatic Head of 20,000mm—this is the amount of water the fabric can withstand before it seeps through. And a Moisture Vapour Transmission rate of 20,000g per metre squared every 24 hours—this is the amount of water vapour that passes through the jacket over time.

DURABLE WATER REPELLENCY™

Our DWR ™ finish is an advanced treatment which dramatically increases the water repellency of our fabrics. On its own, it offers a useful level of shower resistance; used in conjunction with our Barricade™ technology, it reduces the tendency of the face fabric to wet out and maximizes breathability.

Packpocket™

Clever design is more often than not about what to take off rather than what to put on. It’s about giving one feature multiple functions. That’s why many of our garments feature a Packpocket™. This handy addition converts pockets into space-saving storage by compressing the garment into itself. You could use it as a travel pillow when it’s all packed down too.

Very Disappointing

★☆☆☆☆

I was pleased to buy a Helix jacket in the recent Rohan sale. It fitted extremely well, felt comfortable and looked very well made. Having been dissatisfied with the performance of a number of lightweight waterproofs from different manufacturers over the years I was confident my Helix jacket would out perform the rest. However, on a very wet and windy day on some outlying Lake District fells (the jacket's first time out) it let me down badly. Rain found its way in through the right sleeve quite quickly and after an hour or so water had penetrated the chest area and had soaked areas of my clothing underneath the jacket. Very disappointing. Although the rain was quite heavy and driven on by a strong westerly wind these are conditions Rohan's sales pitch assures us the jacket can handle.

I have other Rohan gear that I love, such as my Icepack Jacket, but I'll be returning my Helix.

Excellent rain jacket

★★★★★

I bought this jacket in the sale and at the sale price it is very good value for money but I would not have paid £275 for it. I’ve had the jacket for about a month and have used it on three hill walks. The most relevant was a 20km walk going over three or four 800m tops in temperatures of about 7C, strong winds, low clouds and steady rain for 6 out of 7 hours. The jacket doesn’t have any lining so you need layers underneath but it did the job and kept me dry which let the layers below keep me warm. It is very light and very comfortable.

On another walk, 4.5 hours, I needed it as a wind shell so it was in and out of the rucksack. Again, it did the job.

My only criticism is that the external pocket zips are very tight and when it was cold and wet it was very difficult to open and close them.

Hi PSR, thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback on our Helix Jacket. Glad to hear that overall you are happy with your purchase. I shall pass your feedback onto the relevant department in regards to the external pocket zips.

Wore the jacket today on a 4.5 mile walk in torrential rain and it held up well. My T-shirt underneath was completely dry although there was puddles of water in the pockets and both zips were completely closed.

Men's Helix Jacket

★★★★★

Review on my newly acquired Helix jacket. It is exactly what I have been desperately searching for over the past 20 years, Spending hundreds of pounds only to be disappointed by one or more aspect from new jackets.

It is as if the designer asked me for my wish list and then designed it around everything I wanted.

I have been unluckily enough to be caught in one of the recent very heavy showers, no problem with this jacket. I cycled for an hour or two in the jacket, fully expecting rivers of sweat down my arms or the inside of the sleeves, to my delight nothing.

Use with base layers as reduced thermal benefit.

The price is high but I believe worth every penny.

Could complain about the restricted choice of colours but the carbon is great and what I would have chosen if a bigger choice and might even go for an orange later.

Don't know about durability but will post in a year to see if I'm still loving it!

Great jacket, really comfortable and light ticking every box for me, I cant recommend it enough. 6 stars!

Helix Jacket

★★★★★

I’ve had my Helix jacket for a few months now, so I feel it’s worthy of review now. I chose the Blaze Orange colour, which you can probably see from space, but I like it. If you want to blend into the background a bit more, then go for the Carbon.

It does everything Rohan describes and does it extremely well. I generally use my jacket for strolling to and from work, which is only 30 mins each way but enough to get drenched if you’re in the wrong gear. I also use it for walking in the Lake District, so I need a reliable and versatile jacket. This is it.

I’ve been wearing my Helix jacket during storm Ciara and it’s lived up to my high expectations. Water just beads up and drops off. If you throw strong winds into the equation, which the jacket keeps out without any issue, the water just disappears off the jacket. You’ll arrive at your destination bone dry inside and people will wonder how you “avoided” the rain as you take off your jacket with an almost equally bone dry exterior.

The jacket itself is very light and a thin material. Don’t let the latter fool you; it’s top quality. At this point I should mention the blindingly obvious; it has no thermal properties, so you should be looking at using layers to build up any insulating properties you want. I had my thermal top, a light walking top and a fleece under it in chilly conditions. I was toasty warm and all the layers fit comfortably inside.

It feels extremely soft and there’s no annoying swooshing of material as you stride along. It has a good stretch to it, so any scrambling up hills gives you the flexibility required.

The hood does the job of keeping the rain off your face. Not totally, but I’m yet to find one that defies nature completely. The peak keeps its shape, but doesn’t annoy you when the hood is down; owing to the soft nature of the fabric.

The pockets are large and can easily hold an OS map. If you typically thrust your mitts into your pockets, you may miss that ability as the pockets are too high for that purpose. You’ll need to have some gloves to hand instead.

As with most Rohan items, it will pack into itself. It won’t take up much space in your backpack or luggage.

All in all, the jacket is beyond reproach. It’s a triumph of material engineering.
