A top-specification waterproof designed in a longer length for complete protection.
Read more…Our Hilltop Jacket is a bit of an unusual design these days.
It’s a top-specification, longer-length waterproof designed to offer something that everyone who’s out and about in wet British weather needs most – extra protection.
For those with short memories, it used to be different. Longer length waterproofs used to be commonplace. But now, the vagaries of outdoor fashion and the desire for the ‘alpine look’, have made them harder and harder to find.
Outdoor ‘fashion’, however, is not really top of the agenda for our customers – or us. Our customers tend to know their own mind. And we know you’re not easily swayed by the whims of fashion. Which is why our Hilltop Jacket has been such a great seller.
Totally waterproof, wind resistant and highly breathable, it’s made using our very own, bespoke 2-layer Barricade™ technology with our highly effective Durable Water Repellency™ finish.
The Hilltop Jacket features deep, zipped waterproof hand pockets, a zipped internal chest pocket and a big zipped map pocket. And, as you’d expect, it swallows up the Guild of Pocket Designers’ worst nightmare – the British Ordnance Survey map.
The hood offers complete protection in a proper downpour and cinches, without fuss, with our neat single pull adjustment system. It has a stiffened and wired peak to adjust to the direction of rain. And when not in use, it packs away into the collar for a smarter, everyday appearance – which is quite handy if you’re heading into town. Plus, the collar is lined with soft-touch micro fleece for extra comfort.
The cuffs are adjustable and the waist adjusts with a draw-cord hidden on the inside waist line – which means you can get the perfect fit and fine-tune the ventilation on the go. The Hilltop Jacket now also has an attractive checked lining.
Washing Instructions
Caring for your Rohan Barricade™ waterproof will improve its performance and longevity. Simply machine wash your item at 30C with a gentle non-biological, liquid detergent. We recommend a second rinse to remove all traces of detergent from the fabric. Don’t use fabric conditioners, dryer sheets, stain removers or bleaching agents as these can impair the fabric performance. Garments may be drip dried. To rejuvenate the finish tumble dry your waterproof on the coolest setting, ensuring it is fully dry to complete the process.
Your Barricade™ waterproof has a Durable Water Repellency finish on the surface of the fabric. Over time, with wear and exposure to the environment, this can degrade, stopping water beading up on the surface of the jacket. Cleaning your waterproof will help maintain the finish. If necessary a re-proofing product may be used to restore the DWR. This can be used in your wash cycle and is activated by a cool tumble dry.
Fabric:
100% polyamide with waterproof Barricade™ membrane technology and 100% polyester lining.
We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.
Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.
Barricade™ is a waterproof, windproof and breathable technology that has been tested and measured to achieve a minimum initial Hydrostatic Head measure of 20,000mm and an initial Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate measure of 20,000 g/m2/24 hrs. With our 2-layer construction method, a water-repellent outer fabric and the PU hydrophilic membrane are bonded together. A loose lining protects the membrane from the inside.
Our DWR ™ finish is an advanced treatment which dramatically increases the water repellency of our fabrics. On its own, it offers a useful level of shower resistance; used in conjunction with our Barricade™ technology, it reduces the tendency of the face fabric to wet out and maximizes breathability.
Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.
Clever design is more often than not about what to take off rather than what to put on. It’s about giving one feature multiple functions. That’s why many of our garments feature a Packpocket™. This handy addition converts pockets into space-saving storage by compressing the garment into itself. You could use it as a travel pillow when it’s all packed down too.

I’ve generally been very pleased with this long jacket. Pretty warm, very robust, and great for keeping more of me dry in heavier rain. However the pockets let it down. Now Rohan, who have been the masters of pockets in garments, you might imagine would have cracked the design of pockets for waterproof jackets. But on this one they seem designed to funnel water straight from the garment into the pockets, if you have your hands in them. So you have to keep your hands out (and have cold, wet hands) or put them in (and have cold, wet hands)! Apart from that I do like the jacket
Every year when my wife and I visit various Rohan stores in Worcester, Stratford and Dunster I try the latest Hilltop incarnation on with a view to buying. Unfortunately for Rohan I can't bring myself to buy it as my trusty 11 year old jacket still ticks all the boxes.
I've had my Hilltop since 2009 and have used it every winter and autumn for walking the dogs over the hills and it keeps the rain and wind out just as well today (January 2021) as it did back in December 2010.
Sorry Rohan, it's too good!
I bought this mainly to use whilst walking the dog . Its great to slip on when the weather is really bad because its long length and heavy construction easily keeps the wind and rain at bay. Modern light-weight jackets have their place, but I don't like to go out in them when the weather is bad because I get wet - I can't be bothered with water proof trousers which make me feel too hot. This jacket has been really good. Its well made too.
Purchased in July 2011 certainly waterproof and windproof. With hood up and adjusted really weatherproof. Currently paired with Aligin Vest a very warm combination. Good Value.
Wanted a longer length waterproof
Works very well at keeping out wind and rain
Big enough to put thicker layers on underneath when cold and packs to small size
