The Full Story+

Designed for trekking, walking and active outdoor use, our Momentum Jacket is a lightweight, super-packable hard shell jacket that takes advantage of our 2.5-layer Barricade™ technology.

It’s totally waterproof, extremely breathable and completely windproof – offering a reassuringly high level of protection, without the weight penalty. In fact, its low weight combined with very compact pack-size, mean it’s the sort of waterproof that you can always stick in your rucksack - ‘just-in-case’.

The fabric itself is surprisingly soft and has a light, natural stretch to offer unencumbered freedom of movement without an unduly baggy fit – nice to have all the time, but really useful if you like to add a bit of hands-on scrambling to a typical day in the mountains.

Our Momentum Jacket features a full-protection mountain hood with a bonded peak and adjustments at the front and rear. When not in use, it rolls away neatly and is held in place with a convenient snap tab.

The two outer pockets are large enough to store an OS map and are situated above the line of a rucksack hip-belt. An internal pocket provides a secure storage option for outdoor essentials.

Fully adjustable cuffs and a shaped, adjustable hem, fine-tune the fit, keep out the elements and complete the specification of this impressive lightweight waterproof.

Washing Instructions
Caring for your Rohan Barricade™ waterproof will improve its performance and longevity. Simply machine wash your item at 30C with a gentle non-biological, liquid detergent. We recommend a second rinse to remove all traces of detergent from the fabric. Don’t use fabric conditioners, dryer sheets, stain removers or bleaching agents as these can impair the fabric performance. Garments may be drip dried. To rejuvenate the finish tumble dry your waterproof on the coolest setting, ensuring it is fully dry to complete the process.

Your Barricade™ waterproof has a Durable Water Repellency finish on the surface of the fabric. Over time, with wear and exposure to the environment, this can degrade, stopping water beading up on the surface of the jacket. Cleaning your waterproof will help maintain the finish. If necessary a re-proofing product may be used to restore the DWR. This can be used in your wash cycle and is activated by a cool tumble dry.

Lightweight - Weight: 275g
Lightweight - Weight: 275g

We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.

Packable - Pack Size: 850ml
Packable - Pack Size: 850ml

Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.

Fast Drying - Drying Time: 9 hours
Fast Drying - Drying Time: 9 hours

All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

2.5-LAYER BARRICADE™

Barricade™ is a waterproof, windproof and breathable technology that has been tested and measured to achieve a minimum initial Hydrostatic Head measure of 20,000mm and an initial Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate measure of 20,000 g/m2/24 hrs. With our 2.5-layer construction method, a water-repellent outer fabric and the PU hydrophilic membrane are bonded together. A partial print is applied to the inside of the fabric to protect the membrane from abrasion.

DURABLE WATER REPELLENCY™

Our DWR ™ finish is an advanced treatment which dramatically increases the water repellency of our fabrics. On its own, it offers a useful level of shower resistance; used in conjunction with our Barricade™ technology, it reduces the tendency of the face fabric to wet out and maximizes breathability.

Packpocket™

Clever design is more often than not about what to take off rather than what to put on. It’s about giving one feature multiple functions. That’s why many of our garments feature a Packpocket™. This handy addition converts pockets into space-saving storage by compressing the garment into itself. You could use it as a travel pillow when it’s all packed down too.

3 Secure Pockets

Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.

Mens Momentum jacket

I got this jacket to replace my Rohan Elite, and, although worn for less than a week have found it to be ideal for the purpose of walking & hiking. It is an ideal summer shell that is so light you don't know you are wearing it or indeed packing it! I needed a jacket for the stated purpose and also for long haul travel (when allowed), and I know that it won't let me down! sizing for a 6' 2" 16 stone male is a very comfortable XXL.

I think this is a great jacket. The Barricade material is thin and easily packed away. I’ve tested this in the heaviest of downpours and the rainwater simply beads on the surface. Other reviewers have commented on slightly stiff zips. That is a small price to pay for truly watertight pockets - just not an issue for me. This will be my companion on an upcoming Dales Way walk and the initial reaction is wholly positive.

Zippy

★★★★☆

My new jacket has just arrived and after quite a lot of faffing about with the hood and the bottom toggles I have managed to get the jacket to fit comfortably without making me looking oddly shaped. I have two other Rohan jackets with hoods that are much better designed than this. It is as though the designer was working to a budget so decided just rolling the hood up would do to get it within manufacturing budget. It feels like this is a cost saving rather than a design consideration.

I have lots of other Rohan product, so I have no worries about the level of waterproofness or wind resistance. Though I think it fair to say many of the present garments do not have the same longevity as those purchased 35+ years ago when I first started to buy Rohan.

The jacket is super light weight. I went for large, which I have in other Rohan garments. It is a bit short in the body and quite long in the sleeve length.

The biggest issue for me is the zip. It feels to be poor quality. It is really difficult to get the two sides to engage and getting it to zip to fasten up is harder than it should be. At this early stage I feel sure the zip will be the element that fails first! Not ideal to have this feeling when the garment is brand new.

Given I will only be wearing this on the hills I went for one of the unpopular and odd colours, which made the jacket half price! At which point it represents reasonable value to me. The zip appears to be of such poor quality that I would not have kept the jacket had I paid full price. We will see.

Thank you for feedback. Sorry to hear you had some issues with the hood, good to hear all sorted now. We look to design and sell the best products possible for the intended use and activity. We would not design a product to a price point which can lead to compromises on fabrics and features. We Please be assured all the components we use including the zips are durable and if any point you were not happy with the performance we would recommend contacting our customer service team to discuss further. We hope you enjoy wearing your Jacket on the hills.

Designed for an orangutan

★★★★☆

I don't have unusually short arms other than when it comes to paying! But this jacket is short in the body and long in the arms.

The long sleeves are a plus point as it means I can keep my hands dry and warm without having to wear gloves. The short length of the body means it sheds water from the jacket right on to the buttocks, which would be miserable if caught out in rain without water proof pants.

The hood is a faff but once stowed away it is fine. I believe the hood has been designed to a price rather than designed for function. Other Rohan jackets have much better hood designs.

My big concern are the zips. The main zip is fiddly to engage the two sides and quite difficult to pull up, though it has become easier to close over the few days I have been wearing the jacket. I suspect when the jacket fails it will be the zip that has reached end of life first and prematurely.

I have noticed of late that Rohan garments do not have the longevity one would find in products purchased in the 80s and 90s. I still have a pair of pants from the mid 80s that are fine but other products purchased since were long ago made into dusters!

While I have no doubt the jacket is waterproof, I am finding I am sweating quicker than the jacket can wick the perspiration away, so the inside of the jacket feels damp when I have been for a walk. Though this is more to do with me failing to get my base layer right than the performance of the jacket.

I went for one of the unpopular colour choices so the jacket was half price, and at this price point I think it represents good value; not sure I would be happy to pay full price for this jacket mind!

Men's Momentum jacket

★★★★☆

I like the jacket, it fits well, keeps out wind without feeling sweaty and it's light weight for the performance (not fully rain tested yet). The only negative is that the 3 external waterproof zips are the stiffest I have ever known for such a product. It is impossible to do up or undo without using both hands, for holding one end and the other for pulling the zip, or it just will not move. I have applied special zip lubricator which helps but only slightly. They're almost as stiff as the big waterproof zip on my kayaking dry suit!

Thank you for your feedback, please contact our customer service team on 0800 840 1411 if you wish to discuss the problem you are experiencing with the zip.

Ideal Expedition Jacket

★★★★☆

I have used this jacket tracking in Argentina and on a photography trip in the wilds and cold of Iceland. Very durable and very water proof. Pockets excellent. Sizing allows for wearing a fleece or a few layers underneath in the cold. I keep it a lot in a rucksack and no fold or creasing issues (creases from out) but always hand it up between trips. Hood has a cap and easily adjustable so visibility reasonable in a down pour - but this is an issue with all hooded jackets ie you can see or get wet but not both. Only issue is the zip can be fiddly when cold or in a hurry as tends to stick, so if you take your time it is OK.

Great Rain Jacket

★★★★★

Waterproof, lightweight, flexible and fairly breathable - the perfect combination.

I have worn this jacket in spring and autumn and also winter with a fleece underneath. I have the large size which (in contrast to other people's experiences with more recent models) I find fits more like a typical Rohan medium.

The only slight issue I have is that with no lining gets a bit clammy on the arms if I am riding hard.

Really pleased with this jacket. No issues with hood at all despite reading this in a previous review it can be secured quite easily. When collar zipped up no flapping at all and hood can be tightened with ties. Fit is good true to size, slimmer fit than some Rohan items which I like. It’s very light but still has a nice feel and feels good on, holding some warmth unlike some other light jackets I have. Seems very breathable on an 8 mile walk in the rain today no issues and no condensation inside despite working quite hard uphill. Hood peak is good protecting face from rain well. Overall great jacket and brilliant value in sale !

Great lightweight jacket

★★★★☆

This is just has it said on the tin, my only issue is the hood. It is impossible to tie up when windy without taking it off. For a company like Rohan you would have thought they would come up with a better way than on this jacket

Hi Kevin, thank you for taking the time to review our Momentum Jacket. Sorry to hear that you aren't happy with the functionality of the hood, in particular how you tie it up. I have fed this back to our design team, but if you would like to discuss this further, then feel free to call our customer services department on 0800 840 1411 who will be happy to advise further. Excellent lightweight waterproof

★★★★★

I bought this jacket as, though I have plenty of waterproofs already, I didn't have a lightweight one. I have used it for golf and it was ideal. Went for a walk today in pouring rain for c1 hour and it was totally water proof. What I particularly liked was the hood, which was very comfortable; it didn't press down on the top of my head as others often do. Overall fit was excellent and, together with my Rohan waterproof trousers, kept my dry as a bone.

Proper job

★★★★★

My old jacket gave up the ghost after 10 years of heavy use , so I bought this brilliant jacket . Really light ,easy to pack and waterproof. I needed a jacket which could pack in my motorbike for Travel away . I already have a good pair of Rohan waterproof trousers so this jacket makes up the cover required. Bought the large instead of extra large and fits a treat ,even with a triple layer system . .

Nice light waterproof. Hood quite untidy/annoying

★★★★★

Had some initial problems with size. I’m a large in all Rohan gear. The Momentum in Large seemed to me to be too large/loose. Medium far to small. I Stuck with the large in the end and by and large after a few wears is a good fit. Will be perfect for winter layering as I’m sure, that on me, the large size will accommodate a insulated jacket on top of a Lightweight fleece and t shirt. The only downside with this jacket for me is the hood. I was hoping that as stated in the description, the hood would fold away (out of sight). In fact you can only roll the hood and tie it up. You’re basically left with an untidy appearance around the neck. I’d suggest not to bother, but I do find that because the hood is so light, it is constantly being blown against the back of your head in breezy weather. I’d recommend the Momentum if you’re after a good waterproof layer. But wouldn’t it be great if Rohan could turn their windshadow jacket into a fully waterproof jacket, complete with a tidy, foldaway hood.

Hi Mike, thank you for taking the time to provide such feedback on our Momentum Jacket. Sorry to hear that you aren't happy with hood on the jacket, but I shall pass all of your suggestions onto the relevant department.

Only just received, but sizing enormous.

★★★★☆

Just thought I’d post an early review having only just received the product. The only thing I’m going to point out (At this stage) is the size. I’m a large in virtually all Rohan products. The Large size momentum jacket is a very large large. I purchased it for summer use, probably with just wearing a t shirt underneath. With this jacket, I can wear it with a T shirt, fleece and lightweight insulated jacket and there’s still room. I’m keeping it, because, though it’s very large, there is the bonus of using as waterproof layer on top of an insulated jacket in winter. If you’re looking for a close fitting jacket, I suggest you might want to either buy both a medium and large (while Rohan are doing free returns) and return one or actually go to a Rohan shop and try the various sizes on.

I've had this jacket for roughly six months and during that time have been out in some terrible weather. I was in Ireland this July and one day for about 4 hours it rained non stop,

and for half that time the rain was torrential. The jacket has always been completely waterproof & windproof (so I find it hard to understand why another review claims the jacket leaked). This is a superb garment for the money being both waterproof and windproof.

Totally Waterproof to a Point

★★★★☆

I recently purchased this jacket from Rohan in Truro. I have to say I was surprised at the new Rohan range, very up to date, I moved away from Rohan about 10 years ago as the clothing became very dated.

The jacket is extremely comfortable, and as I’m usually quite a warm person I wanted a jacket I can wear over a base layer that will keep me dry.

I gave it its first real test today, a 10k walk in awful weather, windy, almost steady rain appx 17c.

I wore it with an under armour base layer sweatshirt. I walk at a fairly brisk pace over varied terrain.

The first half of the walk I was still very dry, by the time I got to my destination I was still fairly dry, but not completely, so the claim of “totally waterproof” is not quite there.

At £180 price point, it should be what it says. Having said that I was amazed by how waterproof it was being so flimsy to the feel.

I remain to see how the durability of the jacket performs in the coming winter.

Lightweight simplicity

★★★★☆

At around 100g lighter than the one I'm replacing, the new Momentum Jacket is great for summer use. Its simple construction saves weight, but it has all the essential features of a lightweight waterproof. Folding the hood away using the attached loop is a bit fiddly, but that's the only negative.
