The Full Story+

We’ve been using Microgrid fabric since the turn of the century, approaching half a million sales since its launch. Now with added stretch, for greater freedom of movement.

Designed using advanced Microgrid fleece, a soft, brushed polyester fabric which uses a sophisticated ‘needle-out’ knitting technique to create a grid pattern on the surface of the fabric. These grids give the jacket an attractive textured appearance whilst enabling the fabric to trap air - this is the key to the jacket’s surprisingly high levels of warmth, while still remaining incredibly lightweight and packable.

It’s also breathable and naturally high wicking, allowing the garment to management moisture, keeping you cool and comfortable with all the same warmth as a much heavier, ordinary fleece.

This remarkable material maximises the properties of its stretch for supreme comfort, fit and freedom of movement without restriction. The sleeve cuffs also have thumbholes, which provide additional warmth, comfort and protection.

It features three zipped pockets for security of valuables, one of which doubles up as a Packpocket™ for convenient storage. With mesh lining that can also double as a vent when the pocket is left open, perfect for active outdoor enthusiasts. Layer up under a waterproof or windproof outer layer or perfect on its own as a fleece jacket.

Lightweight - Weight: 325g

We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.

Packable - Pack Size: 1300ml
Packable - Pack Size: 1300ml

Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.

Fast Drying - Drying Time: 5 hours
Fast Drying - Drying Time: 5 hours

All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

Packpocket™

Clever design is more often than not about what to take off rather than what to put on. It’s about giving one feature multiple functions. That’s why many of our garments feature a Packpocket™. This handy addition converts pockets into space-saving storage by compressing the garment into itself. You could use it as a travel pillow when it’s all packed down too.

3 Secure Pockets

Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.

Excellent quality and design

★★★★★

Having purchased 5 or 6 zip microgrid fleece I decided to treat myself to the "Jacket" and I am pleased I did, same workmanship and a very practical fleece. Excellent move putting the pocket inside and lower down so any items stored in the pocket are not being squeezed onto your chest area.

Great all season fleece

★★★★★

There have been some negative comments over this product and it’s sister jumper style, so I thought I would indicate my experiences not having bought one before (of either type). I now have 2 of each now and am really happy.

I love the lightness of them and they do reduce the effect of wind.

Length of arm issue - I hate jumpers/jackets that have too long an arm (and one or two Rohan products I have suffer) but not these.

The thumb loops - I was wary of these, but I simply don’t know they are there in normal use. They work well when cooler and are well engineered.

I have lots of Core Silver Polo type shirts and take Large size. For these fleeces I find medium is the right size, but got one jacket type to use as a second layer, but it’s fine by itself.

Great fleece

★★★★☆

I've just bought this jacket as a replacement for my well loved but abused stowaway jacket that I bought around 8 years ago. The old one I can see through - breathable - the new old I can't - so I guess windproofness has improved, although it was pretty good already. The size seems a little more generous. I don't mind the removal of the outside front pocket, it was exposed and awkward. The inside zipped pocket seems a good alternative. I look forward to using it in earnest. The old one was a good friend - but after painting in it I needed a replacement, so my family said. Also, it was in the sale, which helped.

If it ain’t broke why ‘fix-it’?

★★☆☆☆

Had a couple already from previous seasons. The first one I had is still the best: sleeves not over-long, external chest pocket and good fit. The next season the sleeves went too long and the thumb-hole was over- engineered and too bulky- it really only needs to be a slit in the seam. This season the sleeves are a normal length again (but no longer raglan so less good under a pack) but the chest pocket is internal - so to access it you have to open up your warm layer and let all the heat out and it is impossible to access with a pack on. In any case, it sits directly beneath the lower hand pocket so if you want stuff in that location use that pocket. The fit in the waist is baggier despite the ‘stretch’. Progressively got worse I would say and needlessly meddled with for the sake of design progression and shaving maybe a few grams off.

Lovely to hear you have been pleased with your Microgrid Jackets. Alongside the internal chest pocket, this style does feature a further two zipped hand pockets where one doubles up as a packpocket. Therefore you should find there to be plenty of space for essentials. Sorry you found the waist to be baggier, I will pass your feedback to our Design team.

No Chest Pocket?

★☆☆☆☆

I’ve had about 6 of these jackets over the years. I won’t buy another until the chest pocket is restored. And i liked the older non-stretch fleece better.

Thank you for your review. This style does feature an internal stash pocket with a mesh lining for further breathability when left open, alongside two zipped hand pockets where one doubles up as a packpocket. You should find that this gives you plenty of storage for your essential items.

Missing characteristics

★★★☆☆

I bought this for my husband, who has enjoyed wearing these jackets for a few years. We knew the zipped breast pocket would be absent and that the garment would be lighter. He assures me it is not as warm as its predecessor model and of course misses the pocket. As a plus, the glacier blue is a good colour (close to royal blue). Dear Rohan, I hope your Design Team will take on board the review comments.

Thank you for your feedback. I am happy to read that you are a fan of the Glacier Blue colour. All of our garments are trialled in a variety of climates and situations. I have passed your comments onto our Design Team.

No Chest Pocket

★★☆☆☆

I was about to buy a couple of these in the recent sale but changed my mind when I realised the chest pocket had gone. The pullover still has one so why not the jacket??

Thank you for your feedback. The pack pocket has been removed to make the jacket even lighter, there is an internal stash pocket which you may find useful. Your comments will be passed onto our Design team for future consideration. Thank you.

Why oh why change - a poor decision

★☆☆☆☆

Like many of the reviews on this "updated" garment I find the new product an extremely poor imitation. The previous style of fleece was a resounding success but the stretch product feels a backward step in so many ways - the base material, the mesh pockets, the repositioning of the outer breast pocket, the change of style from the original raglan sleeve.

Despite existing reviews I still went ahead and ordered the new style but can only accord with others and be disappointed with the product. The fleece was returned easily with the pre-paid label. I have many items from Rohan and sadly this is the first disappointment. Please rethink your strategy on this fleece and consider reverting back to your very successful original

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear that you found this garment unsuitable. Based on previous seasons, stretch was added to this garment which is useful when taking it on and off and a traditional sleeve was asked for as a preference over the Raglan. Your comments are really appreciated and will be passed onto our Design Team for their reference.

Not what they were!

★★☆☆☆

I have worn these for the last 5 or so years and they were perfect for almost everyday of the year. However, my last one bought a few months ago has sleeves that are too long and the fabric doesn't feel the same. Should have tried it on earlier so I could have returned it! Was going to buy a new one now but no indication of sleeve length and with no outside chest pocket for mask will probably go elsewhere for my light fleece.

Thank you for your feedback. Please contact customer service on 0800 840 1411 who will be happy to provide any measurements required. The chest pocket has been removed to reduce the overall weight of the garment however there is an internal stash pocket.

No pocket

★★☆☆☆

I have 6 of these jackets brought in past years, but I won’t be getting one this year. The chest pocket shrinking was not good, but deleting it totally is a bad decision I think. It is needed for your phone, tickets, or even to carry a face mask: anything you need to keep secure yet easy to access.

One of the founding principles if Rohan design was many secure pockets. This seems to have been forgotten.

Too many changes...

★★☆☆☆

What happened to the raglan shoulders of the last collection? I was logging on to buy another but I see you have stopped producing them already...

Thank you for your feedback. The style was changed to a more classic shoulder seam based on the usage of the Microgrid. This fleece is extremely popular and used for a variety of uses from everyday wear, travel, walking ....it really is a great item to take anywhere for anything! It may be worth trying this style to see what you think, especially now it has the added stretch benefits .

Pocketless.....

★★★☆☆

Oh Rohan - first the sleeves were too long and now you've done away with the front chest zip pocket.

Please put it back it is ideal for the phone !

Thank you for your feedback. The new stretch Microgrid has been designed to be as light as possible. Your comments have been passed onto our Design team who are currently working on our Autumn/Winter 2022 range.

Much thinner than old version

★★★☆☆

I've just taken delivery of a new stretch microgrid jacket. I've had two Microgrid Stowaway Fleece Jackets for 6-7 years. They were excellent.

First impression of the new one is that the material is much lighter and thinner than the old. I don't know whether this is a conscious design aim, or that it is just a lower quality material. Time will tell. Not fair to test it outdoors in today's sub-zero conditions. I'll keep it as there is a place for light fleeces too.

Sleeves seem to be back to 'normal' lengths. Unlike the Bracken jacket I got a couple of years ago which were very long!

Thank you for our feedback. The New Stretch Microgrid and has been designed to be lighter, with the same thermal properties as previous ones but with the added extra stretch. We look to design and sell the best products possible for the intended use and activity. Please be assured we do not design a product to a price point which can compromise on fabrics and features.

Same old friend?

★★★★☆

This looks like the same Microgrid jacket of many year, and maintaining external pockets. I’ve worn them nearly 365 days per year - highly practical, both cool summers and as a winter layer. I wonder if the sleeves have been shortened a little. Some people remarked recently that the sleeves had been made overlong. I note the price increase. You are certainly seem to be stretching it.
