Men's lightweight, versatile mid-layer with an impressive warmth to weight ratio.
Read more…We’ve been using Microgrid fabric since the turn of the century, approaching half a million sales since its launch. Now with added stretch, for greater freedom of movement.
Designed using advanced Microgrid fleece, a soft, brushed polyester fabric which uses a sophisticated ‘needle-out’ knitting technique to create a grid pattern on the surface of the fabric. These grids give the zip neck an attractive textured appearance whilst enabling the fabric to trap air - this is the key to its surprisingly high levels of warmth while still remaining incredibly lightweight and packable.
It’s also breathable and naturally high wicking, allowing the garment to manage moisture, keeping you cool and comfortable with all the same warmth as a much heavier, ordinary fleece.
This remarkable material maximises the properties of its stretch for supreme comfort, fit and freedom of movement without restriction. The sleeve cuffs also have thumbholes, which provide additional warmth, comfort and protection.
It features a secure zipped chest pocket for convenient storage and security for valuables. It’s a simple design but with a high specification technical fabric and is perfect as a layering piece when used with a waterproof or windproof outer layer or perfect on its own as a fleece.
Fabric:
100% Polyester Microfleece with micro grid structure
We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.
Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.
Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.

An excellent garment. I have owned three of these for several years. They are a very useful weight throughout for all seasons as they can be layered as necessary. I would love to see more attractive colours & a return of navy. My current navy has been worn countless times over the years (testament to the quality) but is now in desperate need for renewal. The two colours available just don’t do it for me I’m afraid.
I have lots of these tops but perhaps my older ones are slightly different. I bought this one just for the colour and am very pleased with it. The sleeves seem very slightly longer than my other similar tops though I haven't measured them to check if they are they are the same. I would like to see a wider range of colours for these tops including some of the colours used in the past.
Love it. I've had them for many years since they first came out. Extremely comfortable. I layer several up so that I can fine tune my temperature when out hillwalking, to valley bottoms, mountain tops or just weather changes, rather than having a thick fleece that is either to hot when on or too cold when off. Used as a layer under a thinsulate windproof jacket in windy conditions. The secure chest pocket keeps my phone in easy reach and the battery warm. Good for quick but secure access to passports and documents, even train tickets, when travelling.. Pack up very small in a rucksack.
Re the guy wanting shorter arms, he must be outside the average size range, mine fit perfectly.
Tarn Blue my favourite colour so hope you get some more medium size made.
At 5’ 6” tall with slim build I’ve gone for a size large to wear over t’shirt and L/S mid-base layer, also 3/4 zip. I chose Anthracite grey to neutralize and have to say both size and colour work wonderfully well. Just right for bridge season walks with day sack on local Fen Rivers Way and further afield.
There have been some negative comments over this product and it’s sister jumper style, so I thought I would indicate my experiences not having bought one before (of either type). I now have 2 of each now and am really happy.
I love the lightness of them and they do reduce the effect of wind.
Length of arm issue - I hate jumpers/jackets that have too long an arm (and one or two Rohan products I have suffer) but not these.
The thumb loops - I was wary of these, but I simply don’t know they are there in normal use. They work well when cooler and are well engineered.
I have lots of Core Silver Polo type shirts and take Large size. For these fleeces I find medium is the right size, but got one jacket type to use as a second layer, but it’s fine by itself.
I still wear two of these tops that must be at least 10 years old. They are my favourite tops. After reading some recent reviews I was hesitant about buying a new one. But I needn’t have been, the new top has hardly been of my back since it arrived two weeks ago. I like the smoother inside and the slightly longer sleeves. Not sure about orange or light grey personally, but the blue is very nice!
I prefer the original less stretchy material ,as it felt less clingy although the collar is better now,it used to be too tight.I have a black one ,which i wished you still made ,also powder blue was great ,again no longer made. Please make a black or pastel/french blue again.
The original version fitted well but recently the sleeves on this garment have been too long. I don’t want to have my thumb stuck through a hole in the cuff to avoid my hands being covered! Why don’t you either shorten the arms or elasticate the cuffs?
Sorry I have not purchased yet. I have had Rohan gear for lots years but stopped buying because I wanted brighter and more vibrant colours for my walking gear. The blue certainly fits the bill for my preference.
The fit is very good and so is the blue colour, but it is definitely only a mid layer because any breeze will blow through it.
Got a couple of the old style Microgrids which are still going strong. This a great improvement with plenty of flexibility, ideal for long days on the trail. Will undoubtedly take it on the Camino Portugues with me as and when things settle down.
As to the colours, I like the red and blue, the grey is very bland. Obviously, you cannot please all of the people.... but I would say that Rohan's colour palette tends to be a little boring, Hopefully this is a sign of Head Office being a little more adventurous.
Bought this top in red, great material with a light feel, the colour is great, so refreshing to have something bright rather than some of the drab colours that have sometimes been around
I have worn the old-style jacket and zip tops for many years and found them very practical and comfortable. The new stretch versions are even better. I am 6'5" tall and needed xl in the old styles. With stretch size l fits me better
What is happening with the choice of colours? The grey is ok but the red and blue look really cheap and tacky. You can't go wrong with Navy blue, green or brown/beige. A definate fail with the choice. I would only buy the grey, the red and blue will be in the sale because no one will buy them. Sorry.
