It’s ideal for hiking, trekking, walking or exploring cities – especially in areas where the weather can change its mind without warning.
A poncho offers some very unique advantages (over a jacket) that make it the perfect choice in many situations. It’s easy to throw on quickly for one thing. It also encourages more airflow round the body – which can be handy in hot, humid conditions.
And, equally importantly, it offers some protection to your kit, as well as your body: which is particularly important for outdoor photographers or nature enthusiasts – you can quickly and easily stash your camera or binoculars away underneath the poncho in a sudden downpour.
Our Ridge Poncho is made from our high-specification 2.5-layer Barricade™ technology so it’s totally waterproof, windproof and highly breathable – you’ll see a lot of poncho designs that are made from waterproof fabrics but rather fewer that are also breathable. That struck us as rather odd: we all want a breathable jacket. Why would anyone put up with a non-breathable poncho?
The inside of the poncho has a P4Dry™ printed lining. This innovative technology is sustainably made from ground coffee beans and is incredibly good at controlling moisture. It’s extremely high wicking: any moisture that forms on the inside of the poncho is quickly transferred to the surface and released into the air. Keeping the weather on the outside while keeping you warm and dry on the inside. P4Dry™ technology is also great at preventing odours, keeping you feeling fresh on the move.
The kangaroo pocket at the front is secured with a YKK Aquagard™ waterproof zip and doubles up as a Packpocket™ into which the whole poncho packs for convenient stowage. The pocket is weatherproof, allowing you to store your belongings in a dry and safe place.
Another long YKK Aquaguard™ zipper on the chest makes the Ridge Poncho easy to put on or remove and allows you to fine-tune the ventilation.
Snapped side panels allow extra expansion and easy access. The hood is adjustable and has a bonded peak for increased protection.

We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.
Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.
Barricade™ is a waterproof, windproof and breathable technology that has been tested and measured to achieve a minimum initial Hydrostatic Head measure of 20,000mm and an initial Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate measure of 20,000 g/m2/24 hrs. With our 2.5-layer construction method, a water-repellent outer fabric and the PU hydrophilic membrane are bonded together. A partial print is applied to the inside of the fabric to protect the membrane from abrasion.
Clever design is more often than not about what to take off rather than what to put on. It’s about giving one feature multiple functions. That’s why many of our garments feature a Packpocket™. This handy addition converts pockets into space-saving storage by compressing the garment into itself. You could use it as a travel pillow when it’s all packed down too.
Our DWR ™ finish is an advanced treatment which dramatically increases the water repellency of our fabrics. On its own, it offers a useful level of shower resistance; used in conjunction with our Barricade™ technology, it reduces the tendency of the face fabric to wet out and maximizes breathability.

The assistant in the shop I bought it in was very enthusiastic about this poncho, and I can see why. It is wonderfully light and comfortable; as well as being waterproof, it is extremely breathable. It is a very good length. The side poppers are really useful: they make it easy to reach into your pockets and they can be opened for extra ventilation. I shall be using this a good deal, I am sure.
Collected the above today at Betws y Coed. Immediately tried it out , walking with my dog ( who has his own extensive wardrobe ) in driving rain along the river Llugwy. The weather was a complete irrelevance , in that I was warm and dry and totally unaffected by the conditions. In fact the driving rain and the swollen river were a silent uncluttered visual delight ( enjoyment takes many forms ). I was amazed at how neatly the poncho folds into its own kangaroo pocket, and how little space it will take up either in the car or a day bag. Getting back to the car, on taking the garment off , I was distinctly untired , because I was warm and dry, and in no way damp. I am always a great fan of Rohan gear, but this item will truly be saluted and enjoyed whenever it is used , and worth every penny.
I recently bought the green ridge poncho and it is such a clever garment, it packs up very small in its own pocket and can be slipped into a rucksack. Its easy to put on and very roomy and brilliant for Birdwatching as you can put it on over binoculars and a rucksack with out any problems. It’s totally waterproof and the rain just shakes off when you take it off. A quality piece of kit, well thought out.
First outing today with my new poncho. I found it quick and easy to put on and take off. It has a handy peak on the hood - although I prefer to wear a proper baseball cap to protect my glasses better from the rain. Because it has poppers on the side, it made it easy to wear in the car and also to reach my dog treats underneath (which I clip on my trouser pocket). Very happy with the fact it was definitely waterproof ... unlike my shoes! There's just one small alteration I would make ... the part under your chin (where it zips up) is very high and slightly annoying as I had to keep pushing it down away from my mouth. This, however, probably makes it better in the rain when the hood is up so I'm not sure how this could be any different. It's a bit more 'flappy' than a jacket but, unlike a jacket, because it's longer it does stop the rain running off and making your trousers wet on your thighs. Overall, I am very happy that my clothes underneath remained lovely and dry. I didn't get as hot as I would have done in a waterproof jacket. Also, it's long enough to keep your bottom dry if you sit down on a bench/log in the rain. I will be wearing this all autumn and winter.
Good idea but poor design. Water enters whenever arms are bent as the pop fasteners are too far apart.
