The Full Story+

Our best-selling Microgrid Stowaway Zip is one of our most popular lightweight fleeces and with good reason.

It's made from an advanced fleece fabric which uses a sophisticated knitting technique to create a grid pattern on the surface of the fabric. These grids give the fleece an attractive textured appearance but they also bring with them a host of technical benefits. It enables the fabric to trap air, lots of it, giving you a surprisingly high level of warmth.

These perforations have other benefits too – they reduce the bulk of the garment and make it lighter, so it’s far more comfortable to wear than a traditional fleece. It’s also more breathable and it packs down small – perfect for taking with you on your next camping trip.

It features a zipped chest pocket for convenient storage of outdoor and travel essentials. The mesh lining can also double as a refreshing vent when the pocket is left open. The raglan sleeve construction reduces rubbing that can be caused when layering garments together, and the addition of thumb loops make it extra comfortable to wear and great for keeping your hands warm.

The Microgrid Stowaway Zip is a versatile fleece overhead designed to maximize the properties of this remarkable material. It’s a simple design but with a high specification technical fabric and is perfect as a layering piece when used with a waterproof or windproof outer layer.

Fabric: 100% polyester microfleece.

Lightweight - Weight: 300g
Lightweight - Weight: 300g

We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.

Packable - Pack Size: 1000ml
Packable - Pack Size: 1000ml

Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.

Fast Drying - Drying Time: 6 hours
Fast Drying - Drying Time: 6 hours

All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

1 Secure Pocket

Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.

Very soft, warm & comfortable. I virtually live in it. Excellent for layering or just on its own if it’s not breezy or you’re indoors & saving on heating.

Getting tighter

I have five of these and love them. Have noted that the pocket has shrunk to the point where little can be put in it. Previously good put glasses and phone now only one of those. Please review.

Sleeves have shrunk by a circumference of an inch by comparison with previous versions. No I have not bulked out! A small amount of material but it makes a big difference to comfort. Please consider reversing these minor changes.

I have 5 of these and they are so versatile

I have five Microgrid stowaway zip fleeces, bought over several years (some new, others second hand). I don't have this year's model and Rohan do tweak their products - my five have lots of small differences. These are amazingly useful and versatile items of clothing. They are a great midlayer for anything down to about -5C and windy, where I might move to something more specialist (and close fitting). The zip provides good temperature regulation. I prefer a midlayer with this length of zip: long enough to be effective, but more robust and less fiddly than a full length zip. In Summer, they are light enough to carry as the "just in case it gets colder after dark" option. I never bother with the stowaway pack. In Winter, a Rohan T Shirt and a Microgrid is a combination for indoors and then add appropriate extra warmth and shell for whatever is outside. Very easy to wash and like all my Rohan gear, seems to last forever. The breast pocket is ideal for a man and I use it for my phone. The thumb loops are quirky. I only use them when putting on an outer jacket - to stop the sleeves getting snagged. As for appearance - these are more stylish than many midlayers. This was especially true for some previous colourways, where the grid pattern of black/colour was unusual and I found strangers would say "hey, I like your top". I'm hoping that Rohan produce future versions that are like this. Overall, like Bags trousers, these are all time classics that are the mainstay of both everyday and expedition use.

‘Goto’ top everyday!

I think I have 8 of these in my wardrobe. Warm in winter and just right on a cool summers evening. Unlike some other comments here, I find the size and fit really good even though I’m 6’6”. Would be nice if the sizing went up to 3xxx? Thumb holes are brilliant and I regularly pack them into the pocket for convenience when out walking. My only comment and wish is that they colours have become somewhat boring and unimaginative - my favourite of more than 3 years ago being a lime green colour. Men are always being accused of not wearing colour and sticking to ‘blue’ and ‘grey’. It would be nice to be given the choice of some less predictable design colours.

This garment has been a staple of my wardrobe this century. I've knocked one star off as the chest pack pocket has shrunk in recent designs which is a clear negative for me. It was fine for years since the original launch. Whether it was inside or outside the garment. Why change it? Perhaps I missed the memo. The thumb holes in the sleeves are handy. When not in use I simply turn the sleeve over to fit my short arms. I have not invested in the jacket version. Like most Rohan tops in recent years it does not have double zips. I prefer to open the jacket zip from the bottom to access trouser pockets.

Microgrid Stowaway Fleece - Arms way too long!

Really love the Stowaway fleeces - I have three zip half-pulls and four Stowaway jackets - but the new design makes these unwearable for me. Measured against my previous fleeces, the new arm length is 4.5 inches longer (both Medium). Will be sending back.

Fifteen years and going strong

I bought my first micro grid 15 years ago (black) and I’m still wearing it though it is now getting a little thin. Since then I have added six more, including my all-time favourite, a light brown micro grid in 2008. I wear one of them almost every day and now have my one in the new catalogue.

Brilliant garment for walking and travelling.

I have bought four of these fleeces over the last couple of years. The sleeves cause no problems to me. They need to be slightly long to allow use of the thumb holes. I was born without a thumb on one hand and most garments slip down over my hand as the hand is narrower without a thumb bone. This garment does not slip down over that hand unless I pull it down to keep my hands warm. I have ordered yet another fleece from ROHAN in the past week.

Good light fleece

I have been wearing these fleeces on a daily basis for about 5 years, in the variously named blues and greys, and over the several small design changes and currently have half a dozen. The medium size fits me perfectly and I have no problem with the sleeve length and don’t use the thumb holes...maybe I just have long arms! They are a dream to wash and dry overnight. The only reason to drop a star is that the fleece seems to loose it’s pile quite quickly through washing and therefore is less effective as an insulating layer, but even so I have now just bought a new one.
