The Full Story+

The Stratus Jacket is packed full of benefits thanks to its innovative insulation. It’s incredibly warm, water-resistant, wind-resistant and machine washable, plus it looks and feels fantastic.

Like regular synthetic insulation, Sustans® fibres have a superior elasticity that achieves great  recovery, flexibility and warmth retention whilst also being fully machine washable and quick drying – a perk that can’t be achieved in most natural downs due to its high moisture absorption. But, unlike wadded synthetic insulation, it mimics the look and feel of real down by manufacturing the fibres into fill-like clusters rather than sheets of wadding, creating a softer finish with a better drape.

Sustans® fibres look very similar to synthetic fibres, but instead of using traditional oil to make the polyamide, it uses plant-based oil.

Using this wonderful insulation on the interior in conjunction with the tough polyamide on the exterior and a Durable Water Repellency™ finish, the Stratus Jacket is able to offer impressive levels of warmth and water-resistance, as well as easycare functionality and long-lasting durability.

With two secure mesh lined hand pockets and two internal stash pockets, there’s plenty of room for your necessities. Whilst one of the internal pockets also doubles as a Packpocket™ so you can compress it down small and chuck it in your bag.

The fixed hood has a single point of adjustability on the back and has stretch binding around the face. There’s also stretch binding around the cuffs and an adjustable hem – all of which work to improve the fit and trap warm air.

An excellent choice for outdoor enthusiasts, the Stratus Jacket with its innovative Sustans® insulation performs brilliantly on cold weather adventures whilst still offering great thermal efficiency in changeable, wetter conditions.

Lightweight - Weight: 450g

We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.

Packable - Pack Size: 2000ml

Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.

Fast Drying - Drying Time: 12 hours
Fast Drying - Drying Time: 12 hours

All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.

SUSTANS®

Sustans® is a highly insulating synthetic filling that mimics the look, feel and performance of natural down. Manufactured from a plant-based oil, it’s lightweight, highly compressible and offers a comfortable, soft feel. It’s fully machine washable and extremely quick drying – the perfect choice for cold-weather travel and outdoor use.

DURABLE WATER REPELLENCY™

Our DWR ™ finish is an advanced treatment which dramatically increases the water repellency of our fabrics. On its own, it offers a useful level of shower resistance; used in conjunction with our Barricade™ technology, it reduces the tendency of the face fabric to wet out and maximizes breathability.

4 Secure Pockets

Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.

Packpocket™

Clever design is more often than not about what to take off rather than what to put on. It’s about giving one feature multiple functions. That’s why many of our garments feature a Packpocket™. This handy addition converts pockets into space-saving storage by compressing the garment into itself. You could use it as a travel pillow when it’s all packed down too.

Mens Stratus Jacket

★★☆☆☆

Always found Rohan clothing excellent but this jacket proved a disappointment. As others have commented the major problem was the zip which was in my experience inadequate. It burst open on several occasions when out walking. This is a great shame as the jacket, except for the zip, is of a really good quality. I returned it and Rohan gave me a gift voucher for the cost of the jacket but I ended up without the protection I wanted. Hope Rohan will soon produce an alternative.

Thank you for your feedback. Sorry to hear you experienced an issue with the zip and you have already spoken to our customer service team. You may wish to have a look at the Downtown Jacket as an alternative.

bad zip

★★★★☆

All good except for the zip, it has opened from the bottom a couple of times you then have to force it back down I guess it will break at some point.

Thank you for your feedback. We will pass your feedback to the design team who are working on the Autumn Winter 2022 range at the moment. If you have any concerns about the zip now or in the future our customer service are only too happy to help should you need it.

Very happy with this jacket. Perfectly warm most of the time. I have a downtown and a tundra but the Stratus jacket is my go to coat for most weather conditions and temperatures.

Very happy with the fit and finish. Another winner!

Stratus Jacket versus Survival Jacket (2014)

★★★★★

I bought a large Stratus Jacket from Rohan in early November 2020.

In about 2014 my wife and I bought a reversible (black/high-visibility orange) Survival Jacket from Rohan. The Survival Jacket is similar to the Stratus Jacket but uses wadding for insulation versus the down-like insulation in the Stratus Jacket. Comparison between the two jackets in unavoidable since I have worn both jackets so frequently this winter.

I walk to my office and back home every day, regardless of the weather. This winter has been quite cold with probably three straight weeks when the temperature did not go above freezing and on many days the temperature was below 20F/-7C. On average I walk outside more than five miles every day and I spend 1.5 to two hours outside.

Rating of features and performance of the Stratus Jacket:

1. The front zipper is quite small. On a cold day, with gloves on, it is difficult to engage the zipper. The zipper has come untracked a handful times but, with a bit of struggle, the zipper can be undone and re-engaged properly.;

2. The side pockets are at just the right position and angle for me (I am almost 6’-2”) and are ample. The option to pack the jacket into one of the pockets is a useful feature.;

3. The inside pockets are large, easy to access, and very useful.;

4. The storm flap works well especially at the neck and chin when the zipper is completely zipped.;

5. The elasticized cuffs fit and seal tightly over gloves on cold days.;

6. The elasticized cinching at the waist does not work well. Presumably the spring-loaded cinches do not provide enough grip against the elastic cord to hold a tight fit across the top of the legs. After walking just a short distance the cinching loosens and allows air to enter into/exit from the bottom of the jacket.;

7. The hood works well and the drawstring at the back allows the hood to expand or contract to accommodate different kinds of hats as the temperature changes.;

8. I usually wear a lightweight mohair scarf and two wraps around my neck makes the fit a bit snug at the back of the neck. On colder days I wear a heavier merino-wool scarf from Rohan and two wraps around my neck makes the fit very snug at the back of the neck to the extent that I have to concentrate to keep my head up.;

9. The jacket is very windproof.;

10. I experienced a bit of leakage through the shoulders when a 15-minute rainstorm came up suddenly while walking., and

11. The jacket reflects current styles and colors.

Rating of features and performance of the Survival Jacket:

1. The front zipper is quite large and is easy to engage while wearing gloves. The zipper has never come untracked.;

2. The side pockets are at just the right position and angle for me (I am almost 6’-2”) and are ample. The option to pack the jacket into one of the pockets is a useful feature and we have done this quite a few times when traveling.;

3. The jacket does not have inside pockets.;

4. The jacket does not have a storm flap but the zipper seals quite well against entry of cold air.;

5. The elasticized cuffs fit and seal tightly over gloves on cold days.;

6. The elasticized drawstring at the waist of the jacket holds whatever degree of closure is desired while walking and the drawstring does not slip and allow air to enter into/exit from the bottom of the jacket.;

7. The hood works well and the drawstring at the back allows the hood to expand or contract to accommodate different kinds of hats as the temperature changes.;

8. I usually wear a lightweight mohair scarf and two wraps around my neck makes the fit a bit snug at the back of the neck. On colder days I wear a heavier merino-wool scarf from Rohan and two wraps around my neck makes the fit very snug at the back of the neck to the extent that I have to concentrate to keep my head up.;

9. The jacket is almost totally windproof.;

10. The jacket has kept me dry when I have been caught in a lengthy rainstorm while walking but I suspect an extended wetting would allow some moisture to reach the inside., and

11. The jacket is without style.

I recently walked home in the Survival Jacket after dark when the temperature was below 10F/-12C with a 15-20 mph wind. I felt as if I could have walked for at least another 30 minutes before I would have felt cold.

Overall the Stratus Jacket performs as promised.

As a rule of thumb I would switch from the Stratus Jacket to the Survival Jacket when the temperature was below freezing.

If the drawstring at the waist of the Stratus Jacket were able to hold closure, I might rate the two jackets equally as regards warmth.

A bit of extra room at the back of the neck would help to accommodate scarves.

A bit of extra insulation in the shoulders would make the jacket warmer without adding much weight or cost.

I learned by chance that 30 to 60 seconds in a cold dryer made the Stratus Jacket seem warmer, presumably by expanding the insulation.

Thank you very much for your detailed review. All your feedback has been passed onto our Design team.

A good jacket with a flaw

★★★☆☆

This is a good jacket, lightweight, windproof, waterproof, fits well and a good hood.

Unfortunately it has a basic flaw which I notice some other reviews have mentioned, the zip.

It is small and a bit fiddly, and on a few occasions has undone itself bottom to top, that is livable with but for the first time on many Rohan products it hade a complete zip failure.

The small plastic tang that goes into the zip slider disintegrated, wondered why it would not work on closer examination there were a couple of small bits left on a piece of flexible plastic, they then fell of.

Have posted the jacket to Rohan with a request to repair or replace, be interesting to see what happens.

Great jacket but with one flaw

★★★☆☆

Good lightweight jacket, waterproof, windproof, good fit, unfortunately as mentioned in a couple of other reviews it has a problem with the zip. It is quite small and fiddly and on a couple of occasions has undone itself.

For the first time ever on a Rohan product it had a complete zip failure, the small plastic tang that fits into the zip slider disintegrated leaving just a thin bit of plastic.

Posted it back to Rohan last week asking for a repair or replacement, be interesting to see what happens.

review of Stratus Jacket

★★★★★

I'm blown away by this Jacket!

its so warm and yet so light - I've only had it a few days and been it in temps ranging from -2C - +1C and today 5C with a stiff 22mph breeze and totally warm but no sweat problems whatsoever, it performed very well in a heavy rain shower and dried quickly.

Review of my carbon Stratus jacket.

★★★★★

I have had this Stratus jacket for about one month and have worn it in winter weather conditions, often cold and windy, and I couldn't be more pleased with it. I have only worn a merino tee under it so far, no need for anything warmer. I like the cut which is surprisingly generous without being baggy. The length of the jacket with the adjustable hem ensures that no unwanted drafts enter from below and the high neck and hood ensure none enter from above whilst also ensuring that no heat escapes. The length of the sleeves is brilliant, room to stretch (See my Mistral jacket review re sleeve lengths) the pockets are a very good size, as are the internal stash and pack pockets too. The adjustable cord on the hood is a very welcome addition as well. Most of the Sustans technology goes over my head, I will take Rohan's word for the many benefits it offers. Suffice to say this is one superbly comfortable light weight and warm jacket. Kept by the front door, it is the one I keep grabbing first, it has superseded my Downtown jacket, and I never thought I would say that! Another great jacket Rohan, well done.

Absolutely excellent

★★★★★

This jacket is so brilliantly designed. I chose Extra Large so in extreme conditions I could have an under layer. The zip is absolutely robust but necessarily thin so as to ensure full insulation. With the hood my head is well protected as it overhangs my face and leaves my specs. well protected. My Extra Large Helix Jacket fits well on top so where there's no watering holes open due to ,Covid-19 these two would ensure complete survival without an inner layer, even in the most extreme conditions!. In my opinion it's better than the men's DownTown Jacket which don't have a hood.

My review of the Stratus Jacket

★★★★☆

Pleased with my purchase of the Stratus jacket the fit is good the insulation is the best i have in any coat/jacket my only disappointment as has been stated in other reviews is the ZIP it certainly needs to be more substantial, at least double the size, i have larger zips on my summer fleeces!!

Love my Stratus jacket, BUT....

★★★★☆

Had my jacket for about 5 months now. I have a pukka down jacket for use on the hill, but wanted something lighter for everyday use about town. I really like the fit and cut of the jacket, and layered underneath I'm nice and toasty. It could really have done with an internal security pocket though. The thing I really have a problem with is the zip. This is totally not suitable for an outdoor garment. The zip is more suited to a fleece or cardigan than an outdoor jacket. It needs a more substantial zip. In the 5 months I've had the jacket the zip has split apart (from bottom to top) on at least three occasions. This really isn't good enough. If it happens once more I shall be contacting Rohan customer services. I maybe should have done that already.

Sorry to hear that you have been disappointed. A member of our Customer Services Team will be in touch with you shortly.

Men's Stratus jacket review.

★★★★☆

I liked the look of this jacket when I first saw it in the catalogue and when it appeared in the sale of was a no brainer to get one. I chose size XL and it leaves a bit of room for layering. The cut is not "athletic" thank you Rohan, we do not all go to the gym. Construction and quality are first rate. It is light enough to scrunch into your sack and there are no flashy logos either, just a discrete Rohan on the chest. First test was a trip to the shops, hardly a severe environment but it was dry and minus one Celcius. I just wore the jacket over a t shirt and it was easily warm enough, too warm in the supermarket actually, the insulation really works well.

A chest pocket would have been nice but the internal dump pockets are adequate, the hip pockets are mesh lined for ventilation.

The hood looks too simple at first glance, but the combination of the single rear adjuster cord and the elastic binding around the face works well, vision is not restricted.

Overall I am very impressed with the Stratus jacket. Obviously it needs a more vigorous test out in the hills but it's more than useful as a winter travel jacket.
