The fit is relaxed and the cut is a little longer than your average shirt, so you can wear it loose for casual comfort or equally it would look great tucked into trousers, jeans or a skirt. If it gets particularly hot you can also roll up the sleeves and keep them in place with a button tab.
Blending soft and relaxed natural linen fibres with polyester, the Malay Shirt is made with Performance Linen which resists creasing and is more durable than ordinary 100% linen. It also won't fade, lose its shape, shrink or stretch like regular linen would.
The Minimum Layer Construction reduces the weight and bulk so it dries much quicker, maximises comfort and breathability and packs down small so you can take it in your hand-luggage.
The Malay Shirt has all the classic elegance of a linen shirt, but without any of the downsides.
Fabric:
Chambray Blue: Performance Linen (55% linen, 45% polyester); Coral Stripe and White/Deep Navy Stripe: Performance Linen (52% linen, 48% polyester)
We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.
Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.
Performance Linen is an advanced blend of natural linen and technical synthetics which offers all the benefits of linen – with none of the downsides. Just like natural linen, it’s cool and comfortable in the heat. But it’s also easy to wash, highly resistant to unsightly creasing and far more durable. In fact, it’s perfect for travel.

Just received my Malay shirt - very quick delivery. Very pleased with the quality and fit. Sleeves perfect length for me. Wished I'd been quicker ordering the blue before they sold out in the sale but dusky pink makes a change. Decent weight means it'll be fine for Spring and Autumn.
I have a few of these shirts - they are stylish and practical, both for travel and for work. Contrary to the views expressed in other reviews, I find the pockets to be a great asset. For one thing, they let me get away with not wearing a bra - quite a bonus on long journeys or in warmer weather. The pockets are also the perfect size for passport, boarding passes and tickets while on the go, and now for the ubiquitous hand sanitiser.
But I only buy these shirts in the sales for two reasons: the fabric looks fabulous to start with, but after frequent wear and washes it becomes worn and tired. Also, I find the sleeves too long and I don't like the roll-up look, so I need to spend money on alterations- I have them shortened to a flattering practical 3/4 length.
Perhaps in the near future Rohan could introduce a model with short sleeves, like the Maroc model for men?
I love these shirts - I hope they continue. No ironing, relaxed comfortable fit - easy to wear and can look smart or relaxed. I look forward, to new colours.
I had been eyeing up this shirt for ages and took the plunge in the recent sale. So glad I did. Love the dusty pink colour and unlike most of the other reviewers, I love the front pockets. Perhaps not being well endowed helps. So thankful there are proper buttons rather than poppers as on some of your other shirts. Nice and long too. I would echo one of the other reviewers though about the weight of the shirt - it is not a lightweight linen - so could be quite hot in a hot climate. however, living in north wales this is a bonus - I can see I’ll wear it through all seasons.
The review “Too long in the body” made me give this a try. Its the first long sleeved shirt I’ve bought from Rohan in years as I’m tall and sleeves on previous Rohan shirts were half way up my forearm.
This is a good length for me (at 6 foot I can tuck it in, not always the case), the sleeve length (from the top of the sleeve to the cuff is 24.5 inches). I guess it might be a bit long for tucking in on someone shorter - not something I’ve experienced other than on the odd occasion I’ve borrowed an XL shirt from my husband. The images show it untucked so you can see if that’s a way you’d wear it.
This will be a good shirt to wear around the city in the warmer weather and I always find Rohan fabrics good at what they say they do. Definitely one I’ll wear for casual wear and if the dress code is casual then this would work as a work shirt.
Value ok in sale, not sure about at full price
I have worn these shirts since they first came out - many years now. The design has been altered slightly over the years, not for the better in my opinion. I liked the extra material, the slightly "baggier" look. I like the pockets - but then I have had a mastectomy, and the pockets hide any unevenness. Why Rohan have stopped making size 20 I find hard to understand. My local Rohan shop said they just flew out. Rohan make clothes for large men, but not larger women!
This is an excellent linen shirt and, as the description says, with careful laundering it doesn't really need to see an iron. After reading other reviews I carefully removed the pockets and am so glad I did it's a great improvement. On the other hand I don't expect to have to adjust a garment in this price bracket. I'll probably try another colour when on offer but wouldn't pay the full price.
I'm delighted with the fit and the fabric. I've had several of the linen dresses and love them so decided to have a shirt. Usually I wear something over the top to hide the pockets etc so I took the advice of other reviewers and just removed them! Good thinking, and I removed the pockets from my winter shirts as well, don't know why I didn't do that ages ago.
A HUGE thank you to the two reviewers who reported success in removing the pockets from this shirt. I had considered it, because I agree that large patch pockets are deeply unflattering, but was scared of ruining my £70 shirt. After reading those reviews I have now carefully gone ahead and I am so happy at the improvement. This fabric is amazing! While I was at it, I removed the cuffing loops and buttons too: much more comfortable now.
Very disappointed as I usually purchase at least two Malay shirts from the Summer range
But this year I found the design to be too long in the body and the sleeve length. I am also not a huge fan of the breast pockets
I own three of these shirts. My first was white, and then I came back for more. When I travel, I wash it by hand and it comes out looking great after merely dripping dry in the bathroom. Except for the most humid weather, I find it great year round, but nothing feels good in high humidity. Unlike other reviewers, I love having the option of pockets on everything I own, and find the pockets on this sit flat and look good.
I ordered this in chambray stripe and white. Both so comfortable and cool. I agree with other reviews about the top pockets but this is a tiny niggle and overall this is a shirt I will wear throughout the summer - perfect for travelling and lazy summer days. Washes well too.would recommend.
Just to say that I really like this Linen range, it really does the job. The only reason for this review is to agree with another lady re pockets! Why on earth do designers think that chest level pockets are a good feature? What are we going to put in them exactly? Just spoils the line and like the other reviewer, I remove them (always a fiddly job). While I'm in the mood, please stop putting pockets in shirts, there always enough other pockets in other Rohan clothing items. We don't need them in shirts, just spoils the line and look lumpy when sitting down!
I had hesitated to buy Rohan linen for ages as when in shop it seemed to crease when I crushed it with my hand. However an assistant was wearing it and swore by it. So finally gave it a go and bought the khaki coloured linen short.
Creases do really drop out when you wear it. Wash and hang and you don't need to iron. So now want to replace all the linen items in my wardrobe! In fact I now have a shirt, T shirt, dress and trousers in Rohan linen-blend.
However a few caveats. The linen is quite heavy so in humid and hot conditions I really would prefer a thinner linen. Even in Greece in May I felt a bit hot in my navy blue linen trousers. Also I don't think the breast pockets do much for most women so I unpicked the pockets from both the shirt and dress and it doesn't show at all - and they look much better. Finally would like to have hanging tabs for when travelling.
