Read more…The Women’s Aran Jacket provides superior warmth from our fully lined Insuloft synthetic wadded insulation, which has an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio that is tough, lightweight, packable, fast-drying and easy to wash. Proven over many years by Rohan – it’s a great all-rounder.
Rohan has pioneered this manufactured insulation, and by weight, it’s almost as effective as natural down. Unlike natural down, however, it doesn’t lose its warmth the minute it gets wet, so it’s perfect for activewear or the damp, cold conditions that are the hallmarks of the British winter.
With the one-point adjustment thick fixed hood, it is sure to keep your head warm on those cold winter hikes. The jacket is created from tough and durable fabrics and fully waterproof, as it’s come with the Barricade standard.
The jacket includes five-pockets, two lower zipped pockets protected by flaps with poppers and an internal zipped pocket for peace of mind that allows you to keep your valuables safe. In addition, we have added to the two lower hand warmer pockets lined brushed tricot for added comfort and a touch of luxury. Tricot refers to the name of the fabric structure and is soft to the touch, perfect for those cold winter days when out walking the hills.
If you’re looking for a jacket whilst protected from the elements, then look no further than the Aran Jacket. The ideal essential to any adventure.
Fabric:
100% Polyester with 100% Polyester part lining and 100% Polyamide
We were the original lightweight revolutionaries. Back in the 1970’s we realised that cutting weight without losing performance meant that you can take less and do more. Everything we make is engineered to achieve this.
Low pack size is a benefit whether you’re packing for a day’s walking or for the trip of a lifetime. We continually scrutinise fabric specification and garment construction to minimise the packed size of our clothing. The actual pack size is tested and listed.
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit for unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.
Our DWR finish is an advanced treatment which dramatically increases the water repellency of our fabrics. On its own, it offers a useful level of shower resistance; used in conjunction with our Barricade technology, it reduces the tendency of the face fabric to wet out and maximizes breathability.
Losing the odd bit or bob when you’re close to home is rarely an issue, but losing car hire keys, passport, phone or wallet becomes more important than ever in a far off land. That’s why lots of thought goes into safer pockets – deeper, zipped and hidden.
The Barricade standard gives you reassurance of a high level of waterproof protection. All of our waterproofs must meet our Barricade Standard to be ten times the British standard for waterproofing.
The waterproof fabric of the garment has two layers. The water-repellent outer fabric and the PU hydrophilic membrane are bonded together. In addition, a loose lining protects the membrane from the inside.

Lightweight and breathable with loads of room in the pockets. Washers well and dries easily for a winter coat. I am a HS 12/14 and wear large as I have broad shoulders and like plenty of wriggle room. I wear it round the horse yard and for walking riding etc. I also have the yellow one which I use for best !
I bought the Aran when it was available in orange at sale price after Christmas. As such it was excellent value for a really quality coat. I love the colour and the feel of it. I stayed fully dry in a recent downpour and have been warm enough out walking in temperatures down to 3 degrees. It’s not warm enough to sit still for an hour at this temperature though, as I discovered watching my son’s tennis lesson!
The hood is snug and feels cosy, with handy toggles to keep it in place. The zips and pockets feel sturdy and the design is well thought out. It’s a shame they are no longer offering it in brighter colours.
My one niggle with the Aran is with the giant pockets. The concept is good and I like the idea of being able to carry an OD map but in reality this is a very rare need and their practicality day to day is hampered by being so deep. I carry a fair bit in my pockets, having two young children, so I thought big would be better but in reality everything falls to the bottom and to reach it is quite awkward as the coat sleeve doesn’t fit into the pocket so it becomes uncomfortable and restrictive at your wrist as you try to rummage for something in the depths! In addition, anything that falls to the bottom becomes uncomfortable as you notice it bumping your leg as you walk or if you sit down as it’s so low down the coat. At the same time, there isn’t actually that much room for bulky things like small snacks for the kids as there’s no outwards depth.
I’d still 100% recommend the coat as I’m thoroughly enjoying wearing it, but it’s not quite perfect!
I cannot comment on the waterproofing as I have only worn it during the recent damp days. In my experience, even with four layers, including thermal vest and mid layers, it is not warm enough. Today, with an outside temperature of 6 C I was cold for the whole hour I was out. I find this disappointing after having read the other reviews.
I a delighted with the jacket and have worn it everyday since I bought it, walking in the Yorkshire Dales, dog walking in the park and shopping in town. It is very warm but light. The slightly overhanging snuggly hood gives extra protection in driving rain and wind. The pockets are large. The zip can be opened from the bottom, which is useful when driving.
I wore my jacket on the weekend of storm Arwen, and I am so pleased. The extra long front pockets are safe for small items and for keeping hands warm, the hood kept my head warm without my peripheral vision being affected, a warm and cosy jacket, with sleeves long enough to keep your hands warm if you are without gloves.
Love the colour and the fact that it is warm and waterproof. Good length. No problem adjusting hood for wind. Like the big pockets. Very snuggly coat.
I bought this jacket a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. It is warm and snuggly and has lots of storage space in the pockets.
The colour is nice and bright.
Very disappointed. Initial impressions good and bright colour (at last!).
Nice feel to fabric, warm and waterproof.
However, front pocket is so long I couldn’t get my hand/arm in it to the bottom. Opening is far too high for comfort or function. (side pockets good).
Hood enormous, far too deep, looks ridiculous and falls over face.Tightening sides does not rectify this at all.
No collar - hood linked to back of jacket so it sticks up and looks rumpled and untidy whenever jacket put on. No way to rectify this.
I had thought at last Rohan had made the winter jacket of my dreams.
Sadly I would never wear it!
