Local Knowledge

A pedestrianised city centre, neatly enclosed within the ancient city walls, makes Chichester ideal for exploring on foot. Aside from Rohan, you’ll find many other fantastic shops and broad streets lined with beautiful listed Georgian buildings. The towering presence of the cathedral cannot be ignored, or the peregrine falcons which can be heard as they swoop over the city as the sun sets.

Chichester city centre's broad streets are packed with listed buildings, with the list headed by the towering presence of Chichester Cathedral, now home to a family of peregrine falcons who can be heard as they swoop over the city at dusk.

Though it’s a relatively small city, Chichester has theatrical and artistic tradition that places twice its size would envy. It’s home to many art galleries, including the Pallant House Gallery which is held within the unique setting of an 18th century townhouse with a 21st century contemporary extension. Plus, the award-winning Novium Museum is free to visit. This is built over the remains of a Roman bathhouse and offers three floors of fantastic exhibitions.

When you’re finished in the city, shopping and exploring, head to the unspoilt coastline and extensive sandy flats of West Wittering beach – it’s a must-see for a trip to Chichester. Kit yourself out with Rohan and take a brisk walk along the beach, around the sand dunes and lap up far-reaching views across to the Isle of Wight.

And finally, Chichester Harbour. It is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, of national and international importance for landscape and nature conservation. It is home to rare wildlife and birdlife, as well as coastal habitats that cane be seen from land or sea.
