From sun-scorched valleys to tropical humid forests, these trousers give you complete freedom of movement and Dynamic Moisture Control (DMC) keeps you comfortable even on the hottest of days. DMC is a permanent, wicking treatment that rapidly spreads moisture, such as sweat, over a wide surface area of the fabric; the garment is able to dry quicker, so you stay comfortable for longer no matter your activity.
While UPF 40+ sun protection* provides protection against harmful UV rays, Insect Shield® technology provides long-lasting and effective defence against biting insects. Garments are coated in a permethrin-based treatment which is invisible, odourless and causes insects to have a ‘hot foot’ reaction and fly away before they can bite.
The Men’s Pioneer Trousers feature an adjustable and removable belt with two large mesh-lined hand pockets. Whilst there are three external zipped pockets for holding your important valuables safely and a concealed tri ring on the inside of the left-hand pocket that allows for easy reach to your keys.
*A Note on Sun Protection
All Rohan garments which carry our sun protection icon, have been tested in accordance with recognised international standards for ultraviolet radiation protection. As a guide to the level of protection offered to covered areas, garments are awarded a rating of UPF 40+. Protection may be significantly reduced with extended wear or if the garment is stretched or wet; the reduction of associated health risks will vary with other factors such as skin type or individual medical history.
Insect Shield® Note
Insect Shield® technology converts clothing into convenient, comfortable and effective protection against biting insects. Each Insect Shield® labelled garment is treated with Permethrin, an invisible and odourless ingredient that protects against insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers and midges. The treatment is so tightly bonded to the fabric fibres that it retains effectiveness through the expected life of the product – well beyond the limits of most fabric finishes.

Pioneer Trousers review : 36S size
Having checked with Rohan Customer Services (thank you Emily Simon for your helpful answers to my questions!), I bought a pair of the new Pioneer Trousers in Rohan's launch sale last month to supplement the 2 pairs of excellent Trailblazers Trousers that I've had for a few years.
Having looked at their specification on the web page I wanted to check first just how similar they were to the Trailblazers as I have made good use out of them given they fit me well, feel comfortable at all times and wanted to ensure these would be a good match given that the Trailblazers have now very sadly in my opinion been discontinued from the range.
Happy to report that although slightly heavier in weight and the pockets are a different styling which I don't find quite as useful as the Trailblazers, overall they feel similar to wear from a material viewpoint. Whilst Rohan don't give any guarantee about their performance when it rains, I found they did keep my legs dry even though the material did get a bit damp when I got caught one morning in a short heavy shower.
Have also put them through a machine wash and they seem to be fine after that and dried quickly too.
Not sure I would wear them too often though as the weather warms up as the Trailblazers being lighter are better in those conditions.
Please Rohan do seriously consider bringing back the Trailblazers, they're the best ever which is why I can only give the Pioneer Trousers 4 stars!

Highly Recommended and Great Fit....
There haven't been a great deal of items recently from Rohan that I would give five stars, but the Pioneer Trousers (short leg) are simply excellent. The fit is just right for me, the rise is low to mid and there is plenty of room in the calf area, I can even wear them with boots. I know this may sound strange but a lot of the recent trousers have been very restrictive below the knee. The material has a decent amount of stretch, the articulated knee works very well and no issues with kneeling down. The short leg is really well designed and the thigh pockets are in the right place i.e. on your thighs and not on your knees. The pocket lining is mesh which gives added ventilation. I would prefer a button on the front (they are a press stud) but the belt supplied does the job and keeps the press stud closed. The service from the staff at the Preston shop was superb and they are always very knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming.

Wowsa, The Future Is Here....
Wowsa, the future is here with the Rohan Pioneer collection. They have reached the top of their game with these trousers and equivalent Pioneer shorts.
As expected these have Insect Shield, Dynamic Moisture Control, 40+ sun protection, Easy care, Lightweight, Packable, Quick drying and Tri-ring inside left external pocket.
In addition they are extremely comfortable and hard wearing. The zipped pocket easily holds my large mobile phone. These trousers are my go to every day trousers whether I'm walking in the New Forest or travelling and they are now in my top five favorite Rohan products.
I purchased these from Linda in the Lymington Store. Linda is old school with her product knowledge, customer care & efficiency. She is a credit to Rohan.
